The latest season of Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon, popularly known as DanMachi, has set its focus on the two mysterious characters; Syr and Freya. Despite being a somewhat obscure character, much about Goddess Freya has been revealed over the course of the past four seasons. However, the same cannot be said for the peculiar waitress who looks after Bell from the shadows.

Syr was introduced to DanMachi’s narrative in the very first season of Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon. She presented herself as a kind and caring waitress at the Hostess of Fertility, and she would regularly make meals for Bell Cranel. Apart from these mere facts, nothing about Syr is known, be it her affiliation or her backstory. She has always been present in the backdrop, aiding Bell Cranel in his endeavors.

Since her first appearance, Syr’s sentiments towards Bell Cranel have been more than visible. From making meals to worrying about Bell’s safety, Syr has remained by Bell’s side through thick and thin. Viewers were initially led to believe that this bashful waitress is a mere side-character with no significance for the narrative. However, DanMachi has flipped the script, turning this side-character into a major piece in the series’ premise.

Instead, there is a complex system set in play, one that has deceived viewers and the citizens of Orario alike.

Instead of just Freya and Syr being involved in this fiasco, there is one more character that has played a major role in this act — Horn. Bestowed with the power of transformation, Horn is capable of changing her appearance into Freya, allowing her to take the place of her goddess. While Horn takes on the role of Freya, the real Freya transforms into Syr, masking her godly aura and appearance to live among humans.

However, volume 16 of DanMachi’s light novel reveals the backstory of how Freya ended up taking the appearance of Syr. The member of the Freya Familia currently known as Horn was once an orphan named Syr. As an orphan, she was saved by goddess Freya, along with being granted a wish.

The child wished to be more like the goddess, and Freya granted the wish by bestowing upon her the ability to transform into the goddess herself. In return, Freya took the name Syr and her persona, using it as a way to live among humans. While Freya took on the image of Syr and lived as a human, her seat was filled by Horn, who could use transformation magic to play the role of the Freya Familia’s goddess.

Freya, the goddess of fertility, is a character of many mysteries. Her reasoning for taking on the role of a human named Syr is another peculiarity of her character. Initially, Freya took on the image of Syr as a mere game, one where gods and goddesses of Orario would shed their godlike persona and try to live among humans as mere mortals.

However, Freya’s life as Syr became much more genuine and real to her, a sentiment that was further exacerbated after she fell in love with Bell Cranel. What started off as a mere game for Freya turned into a heartbreaking affair, as she used her disguise as Syr to remain by Bell’s side. Knowing that gods and humans can never be together, Freya used the persona of Syr to play around with Bell, something that wouldn’t have been possible in her true, goddess form.
