Daredevil: Born Again star Charlie Cox answered questions about the Disney Plus show's connection to the original Netflix series. According to Cox, the new series may have more connections to its predecessor than fans thought.
Daredevil: Born Again marks Cox's first MCU project as the lead character after making supporting appearances in Spider-Man: No Way Home and She-Hulk. However, since the show was announced, there has been uncertainty about whether Born Again shares continuity with Netflix's Daredevil series. The latter series was produced before Marvel Television was folded into Marvel Studios under Kevin Feige's control. So, fans wondered if Marvel Studios might borrow characters from Netflix's Daredevil series but retcon events from that show or classify them as multiverse variants to start fresh with Born Again.
Kevin Feige Tease X-Men's MCU Future, But It's Going To Be A While
The X-Men have an important future in the MCU, but Kevin Feige revealed fans must wait until after a big Marvel Studios movie to see it unfold.
Since then, Marvel has suggested certain elements from Netflix shows like Daredevil or Jessica Jones could become MCU canon, though there's still some uncertainty as to what exactly. During an interview with Empire, Cox addressed at least one element from the Netflix show that will carry over into Daredevil: Born Again. According to Cox, there were discussions about "reinventing the whole thing" but Daredevil: Born Again ended up being "more of a continuation."
A lot of the history follows on [...] The relationships and dynamics set up in the previous seasons still exist.
One element from the Netflix series that will carry over into Daredevil: Born Again is the history between Matt Murdock, Deborah Ann Woll's Karen Page, and Elden Henson's Foggy Nelson. The latter two weren't originally in Daredevil: Born Again, but Marvel Studios opted to revamp the show in the middle of production, scrapping some scripts and retooling the series to include Karen and Foggy. Cox explained that the trio will "have found a pretty good rhythm" when fans reunite with them, but it won't last:
Matt's made peace with his role both as a lawyer and a vigilante. Then, of course, shit hits the fan.
Fans are relieved to hear Daredevil: Born Again won't discard the Netflix series entirely. While Netflix's Marvel shows weren't all praised–The Defenders earned its fair share of criticism and Iron First was outright panned–Daredevil seasons 1 to 3 were widely acclaimed. One of the reasons for Daredevil's success on Netflix was the relationship between Murdock, Nelson, and Page. Fans were excited to see Daredevil join the MCU, but losing Karen Page and Foggy Nelson would've been difficult for some to accept. Of course, Daredevil: Born Again set videos suggested this reunion may end in heartbreak.
The Daredevil: Born Again trailer that was screened at New York Comic-Con was well-received, giving fans hope that Marvel Studios will match the high expectations set by the Netflix series. Time will tell, but there's reason for fans to be optimistic.
Daredevil: Born Again is scheduled to premiere on Disney Plus on March 4, 2025.
