David Coronswet's version of Superman is soon going to fly into cinemas around the world on 11 July, but he is already looking ahead to what could be next for the iconic superhero. This movie will kickstart the new DC Universe, which means it's going to set the tone for what fans can expect from James Gunn's franchise moving forward.
There is a lot of excitement about what Superman will be like, and the trailers have hinted at a somewhat light-hearted tone. However, Coronsweet believes that the character could be taken in a totally different direction moving forward.

Despite the way the film has been promoted, Superman's best friend won't be quite as helpful as fans expect in the upcoming reboot film.
David Coronswet Wants To See An R-Rated Superman Project
He Is Excited By The Possibilities For The character
This version of Superman appears to be one that is going to provide quite a lot of humor to audiences, which is a change of pace for the superhero. While he will undoubtedly have moments of seriousness, there is going to be a lighter approach being taken with him, which has led to some fans worrying that Gunn is making the movie too similar to Guardians of the Galaxy. However, during a recent interview with Nerdist, Coronswet opened up about where he thinks the character could go in the DC Universe moving forward.
"I would love to see this Superman in an R-rated project... In a thing like Lanterns where it's that True Detective' feel. In spite of how bright and playful this version is, I think there's room to be flexible."
It's clear that Coronswet is interested in sinking his teeth into a more serious side of Superman at some point in the future, even if it's via a different film in the franchise. That will open up many possibilities for fan theories, and there's no doubt that writers will be thinking up ideas of how to take Superman in that direction. However, even though the actor is excited about the possibilities for the character, that doesn't mean that it should happen.
Superman Is Always Best Being A clean-cut Superhero
An R-Rated Project Would Be Better Suited To Other characters
Superman is often seen as the ultimate superhero in many ways by people worldwide due to how he's portrayed in pop culture. Tapping into that is something that Gunn should do within this DC universe. Superman, having a clean-cut image and always trying to do things by the book in the manner that they should be, is the best version of him. That would obviously have to be changed if he was involved in an R-rated project where he would end up being far more violent, or potentially using dialogue that doesn't feel like it fits the ideal version of the character, which will turn specific audiences off Superman.
However, that doesn't mean that Gunn shouldn't make any DC character R-rated because there is a lot of potential in making that decision. It's just that Superman would be the wrong choice, especially with this particular version. Instead, Gunn should consider some other characters to go down that route, with Batman's introduction possibly being a smarter option because he's naturally a darker and more violent character who lends himself to being an R-rated option to take the franchise in a slightly different direction. All of which would allow Superman to stand out even brighter as the ultimate hero who does everything right, which DC could push moving forward.
DC Shouldn't Alter The Tone Of Superman Too Much
Superman Should Appeal To Everybody Where Possible
Gunn is setting a clear tone with this Superman movie, which is set to feature moments of levity with a lot of humor, and that's something people are interested to see play out. It will take the Man of Steel in a different direction, and while it's not necessarily going to be perfect, once the tone has been set, it would be wise for DC Studios to keep it similar moving forward so fans understand what they're getting themselves in for when watching future movies that involve the character.
On top of that, if DC did decide to create an R-rated Superman movie or place the character in a different project that was darker, the franchise would be alienating a huge portion of the audience. The upcoming Superman movie will be able to appeal to a wide range of people, including younger viewers, and that wouldn't be the case if the age restrictions were taken up a notch. After debuting the character as one that is accessible to everyone, it would feel harsh on younger viewers to then take Superman away by pivoting the story in such a drastic manner. Darker and grittier superhero movies can be a lot of fun, but when it comes to Superman, he should always be family-friendly for the most part, even if the tone gets slightly more serious as the stakes ramp up. This is one of the reasons why the Marvel cinematic Universe has been so successful, because younger viewers have been able to watch the movies and then grow up with the franchise and showcase loyalty. DC should be looking to repeat that idea, particularly with the lead character in this universe. That's why Coronsweet is ultimately wrong about his ideas for Superman moving forward.
