Quite often, it can feel as though video game developers are under constant pressure to innovate between each new instalment. I'm all for trying new things, but there are times when all I really want is more of a good thing. And that's what DOOM: The Dark Ages delivers when all's said and done. More of a good thing.
Granted, I'm being quite generous with the use of the word "more" here, as at just 12 hours long (give or take), the main story is a little on the short side. For some, this may be a problem, but I found the length to be just about right. I never stopped having fun with it, although that might not have been the case had it gone on for too much longer.
Visually, DOOM: The Dark Ages looks great, and the story is serviceable enough. However, as with just about every other game in the franchise, the combat is the real selling point here. I did have to crank the game speed up a little and slowed down enemy projectiles just a touch, but after finding my sweet spot, I had an absolute blast from start to finish.
I was struggling to decide whether to give this one an eight or a nine, but after finding out that you don't get the Pandemonium rewards for completing the game on Ultra-Nightmare, I'm inclined to go with the former. Don't get me wrong, I really enjoyed DOOM: The Dark Ages, but I don't want to have to complete the main story three times just to unlock everything, short though the ride may be.
