Slay the Spire

Easily one of the best indies to ever exist.

It's insane how many hours you can sink in and still don't manage to make it to the third realm.

Slay the Spire is a roguelike deck-builder that will completely consume your free time. The gameplay is simple to pick up but tough to master. Every run feels different, and the strategic depth is incredibly rewarding. But, like any roguelike, it can feel like a grind if you’re stuck on the same part. It’s a must-play for fans of strategy games, but be prepared to sink way more time into it than you expect.

There have been an enormous amount of deckbuilding roguelites, and few of them have reached the heady heights of Slay the Spire. It's a huge part of the reason there have been so many such titles.

If I had to describe the game in one word, it would probably have to be pure. In terms of balance, enemy and card variety, it's a perfectly-judged experience that will always find a way to challenge you. There's an inevitable RNG element in terms of which cards you draw and when, which boss you'll come up against, and such, but experienced players have the knowledge to make the very best of what the game's given them.

The difficulty can certainly be stark before you learn the ropes, though. Some of the most potent cards are utility offerings rather than big damage-dealers, and you can really squander their potential if you haven't learned which those are and how to combo them effectively. Nonetheless, it's truly satisfying to steadily get better and better and rise up the Ascension levels. While there's only a quartet of playable characters, they're all very different and there's an almost endless amount of gameplay here if the title clicks with you.

A fantastic roguelike with addictive card-battling mechanics. Every run feels different, and while it can be tough, the variety in characters and cards keeps it fresh.

When I played the beta, the unfinished art was fun to look at, but the gameplay was utterly addicting. Now it has a full release with a new character, and an interesting lore that's revealed through gameplay. This game was a bit hard to master at first, but it's replayability is so high that I always come back to it when I'm itching to play a roguelike deckbuilder again. The RNG and balance between the cards are so well done, I never felt cheated out of a run. I only saw ways to improve my style. One of the greatest indie games ever.

I met the artist at Emerald City Comic Con and he was really nice, he said the developers are really cool people, so kudos to such an awesome team! Can't wait to see what else they make.
