Naughty Bear is one of Dead by Daylight's most intriguing crossover skins so far, and it's not just because of the skin itself. It's an unexpected surprise from the past, bringing players back to a game that Behavior developed long before Dead by Daylight came to be. In addition to being a fun throwback, particularly for players who know of Behavior's past, it manages to strike a mood that few other killers do, either licensed or original. While not a mainstream addition to the game, it deserves its place all the same, especially thanks to its best feature.
While not one of the most iconic killers to join Dead by Daylight, Naughty Bear is a special addition nonetheless. The original Naughty Bear game came out in 2010, and it starred the titular character getting revenge on the other bears that would bully him frequently. Its premise was similar to Hitman, but the violence was blended with the soft and fluffy artstyle of the bears. As a result, it had an effect similar to that of Cult of the Lamb. Naughty Bear was not particularly successful, but it's obvious that the developers had some affection for it, considering that it's a Dead by Daylight skin.
Naughty Bear's Narrator Gives it a Comedic Edge in Dead by Daylight
What makes Naughty Bear a great skin for Dead by Daylight's Trapper is how distinctive it is. There are other skins that totally change a Killer's appearance, like the HUNK skin for Legion, or the Crypt TV skins. However, Naughty Bear goes the extra mile in a few ways. First, it's the only skin in the game to date that features a unique mori rather than copying the base skin's. While Naughty Bear otherwise plays the same as Trapper, he adds another quirk that's worth noting. Just like in his game of origin, Naughty Bear is accompanied by a Narrator.
In Naughty Bear, a cheerful British narrator offers commentary on Naughty's actions. While Albert Wesker in Dead by Daylight was the first Killer to come with voice clips, Naughty Bear's narrator takes a different approach. Rather than talking himself up throughout the match like Wesker, the narrator only shows up in the main menu, the game's start, during moris, and upon reaching prestige 100. The Narrator retains his usual happy tone in Dead by Daylight, either giving Naughty a friendly greeting or nonchalantly asking him about his plans to murder. He gives Naughty Bear a more comedic vibe, and brings the trial's tone closer to the original Naughty Bear.
The Narrator won't be the last character to speak during trials, as Dead by Daylight's next Killer, Chucky, has already been shown in previews to be a massive trash talker. However, The Narrator's role helps to elevate Naughty Bear far above simply being a reskin of Trapper. Even though he isn't constantly present, the Narrator's whimsical tone is difficult to dislike. In particular, fans of Naughty Bear likely got a kick out of hearing him again after so long. Even though Trapper has long been considered one of the game's weakest Killers, the Narrator makes an excellent argument for playing him as Naughty Bear.
The Narrator retains his usual happy tone in Dead by Daylight, either giving Naughty a friendly greeting or nonchalantly asking him about his plans to murder.
The Naughty Bear collaboration is one of the game's more amusing so far. It's too early to say if Dead by Daylight will revitalize Naughty Bear, but if nothing else, it adds a unique charm to the game. The addition of Naughty Bear's narrator gives the skin the extra flair that makes it a clear upgrade over base Trapper, even if their mechanics are ultimately identical. It makes the IP a good choice to bring in even if it doesn't have the same name value as other slashers. The Narrator of Naughty Bear helps make the skin one of the funniest in Dead by Daylight.
