Developer Motion Twin’s indie roguelike Dead Cells has received a new update that adds costumes, weapons, and more from a slew of other indie titles to the game. This wealth of free content for fans of the punishing pixel art title follows the addition of a new boss rush mode in Dead Cells with the previous update.

Released in 2018, Dead Cells is a side-scrolling, indie roguelike for PC and consoles by developer Motion Twin that shows a heavy influence from titles like The Binding of Isaac and Dark Souls franchise in its gameplay mechanics and combat. As players explore Dead Cells’ procedurally generated worlds, they can obtain upgrades that give their character, the Prisoner, new abilities and stronger weapons. Most upgrades are lost upon death, requiring players to master Dead Cells’ challenging, Dark Souls-inspired combat to have any hope of reaching the game’s end. The game has been praised by many players for its tough but fair combat, and for the extensive accessibility features added to Dead Cells with the recent Breaking Barriers update.

As part of the "Everyone is Here Vol. 2" update, developer Motion Twin has added outfits and weapons based on six other popular indie games to Dead Cells. This new update lets players tackle Dead Cells’ masses of mutated monsters with outfits and moves from Slay the Spire, Hotline Miami, Katana Zero, Risk of Rain 2, Terraria, and Shovel Knight. The addition of Shovel Knight to the world of Dead Cells seems particularly fitting after that franchise made its own foray into roguelike games with the recently released Shovel Knight Dig.

Announced with a suitably action-packed trailer showing off the new costumes and abilities in all their monster-slaying glory, this new Dead Cells update promises to bring even more replayability to a title already packed with content. This update doesn’t mark the first time that Dead Cells has received cameos from some of its indie brethren, either. November 2021 saw the release of the first "Everyone is Here" update, which featured appearances of characters from Hollow Knight and Blasphemous ,among other titles.

Even 4 years on from its initial release, Dead Cells unique art style and rewarding combat, along with a healthy dose of post-launch content, have helped the game stay relevant with roguelike fans. With an update roadmap stretching well into 2023, it’s clear that new Dead Cells content isn’t set to stop flowing anytime soon. And for players who simply find the game’s combat too challenging, there’s always the upcoming console release of Dead Cells creator Sebastien Benard’s pixelated, 2D firefighting platformer Nuclear Blaze to look forward to.

Dead Cells is available now on Mobile, PC, PS4, Switch, and Xbox One.
