Summary

  • Valve's hero shooter Deadlock will reportedly feature 19 playable characters.
  • The game's hero roster is said to include a fairly typical mixture of archetypes, including healers, snipers, assassins, and tanks.
  • The game reportedly plays similarly to DotA, tasking players with eliminating enemies and creeps across four lanes in order to earn currency that can be used for buying power-ups.

The complete Deadlock character roster has surfaced online, along with some other details about the upcoming game. The Valve-developed shooter has already been the subject of several leaks since mid-May 2024.

Previously known as Neon Prime, Deadlock is a 6-vs-6 hero shooter whose development is said to be helmed by IceFrog, the creator of DotA. The game reportedly entered closed alpha testing in May 2024, which gave rise to a number of leaks, including the one that stated the project has been renamed to Deadlock at some point since late 2022.

Rumor: Possible New Valve Hero Shooter Game Details Leak

Details leak online suggesting that Valve, the gaming company responsible for Steam, has a new multiplayer hero shooter in the works.

Two subsequent reports from Insider Gaming have now revealed some additional details about the game, including what appears to be its complete character roster, which comprises 19 heroes in total. The list matches the hero roster seen in some recently leaked Deadlock gameplay footage, which confirmed the names of 11 playable characters. The new names include a gargoyle character called Abrams, as well as Dynamo and Bebop, both of whom are robots. Warrior character Lash is also mentioned in the leak, as is McGinnis, whose design is said to be evocative of a blacksmith or welder.

The same source claims that Deadlock will feature Mo & Krill, a pig and monkey tandem acting as a singular hero. The final two previously unknown characters mentioned in the leak are Paradox and Pocket. But aside from their names, there is currently no other concrete information about either of them. The overall roster is said to span a typical mixture of character archetypes that fans have come to expect from hero shooters, including tanks, healers, snipers, and assassins. The character descriptions seen in the previous gameplay leak and those referenced in the new Insider Gaming report suggest that Deadlock currently features at least three types of elemental damage: fire, ice, and lightning.

Deadlock Reportedly Plays Similarly to DotA

The shooter itself is said to play similarly to DotA, in the sense that matches largely revolve around killing enemies and lane creeps to earn currency—called Souls, in the game's jargon—that can be used for making heroes stronger by buying items. Lane creeps reportedly appear at random locations, whereas regular enemies have predetermined spawn points. Players are also reportedly able to deploy something called Spirit Urns in the middle of a map to increase the Soul acquisition rate for their entire team.

While a typical DotA map features three lanes, Deadlock levels are said to contain four of them. Each lane follows a sky rail that can be zipped across in order to quickly cover large distances. A few of those lanes were previously seen in the leaked Deadlock gameplay screenshots that emerged online in mid-May 2024. It is currently unclear whether the game already has a firm release window that it's targeting.
