Summary
- The mysterious pale character in Death Stranding 2 may be a DHV Magellan crew member based on their tattoo and past images.
- Alternatively, the character could be the real mother of Rainy's baby from Tomorrow's world, forming a potential strong bond.
- Despite the character's enigmatic role, Death Stranding 2 continues to leave fans with many unanswered questions about the story and characters.
Hideo Kojima, creator of the 2019 hit action-adventure game Death Stranding, has not held back in offering fans an extensive look at Death Stranding 2: On the Beach. Its State of Play and pre-order trailers are both over ten minutes long, with plenty of introductions when it comes to story, characters, features, and more. However, despite those two lengthy trailers, there are still a multitude of questions about Death Stranding 2, particularly when it comes to the story and its characters. One character, in particular, appeared for a split second in Death Stranding 2's pre-order trailer, and fans have only been able to speculate on who they might be.
Around six minutes into Death Stranding 2's pre-order trailer, a mysterious pale character with a shaved head appears next to two other new characters, Rainy and Doctor. In the scene, the character is shown standing next to Rainy, who is holding a baby in an artificial womb in her hands and smiling. The character then affectionately places their hands on Rainy's shoulders, as though they not only have a strong connection to Rainy herself, but potentially the baby as well. The scene is only a couple of seconds long, leaving a lot of unanswered questions about the new character's role in the story.
Death Stranding 2's Digital Deluxe Edition Content May Confirm a Highly-Anticipated Improvement
Death Stranding 2's Deluxe Edition includes an early unlock, suggesting a big improvement over one of the first game's most underwhelming systems.
Who Death Stranding 2's Mysterious Pale Character Could Be
They Could Simply Be a Fellow DHV Magellan Crew Member
While the mysterious character's role in Death Stranding 2 could be much deeper than this, it's reasonable to consider that they could simply be a fellow crew member of the DHV Magellan, the mobile base of operations for the new organization Drawbridge, led by Fragile. This theory comes as a result of the tattoo on the character's head, which is the DHV Magellan logo. Additionally, Kojima shared a Death Stranding 2 image in a post on X several months ago that showed the pale character fully armed, further suggesting their potential role as a crew member of the DHV Magellan.
There are still a multitude of questions about Death Stranding 2, particularly when it comes to the story and its characters.
Perhaps, in light of the scene shown in Death Stranding 2's pre-order trailer, they are a friend to Rainy and are simply a part of a supportive environment for Rainy and her new baby. It has been confirmed that Rainy actually carries the baby herself, though why the baby ends up in an artificial womb similar to those that house Bridge Babies remains unknown and likely will stay that way until Death Stranding 2's launch.
They Could Be a Mother From Tomorrow's World
Another intriguing theory that seems to be a bit more likely is that the pale character actually came from Tomorrow's world and is the real mother of Rainy's baby. In a scene from Death Stranding 2's Tokyo Games Show trailer, Tomorrow says to Rainy, "In the place where I came from, no one gave birth to babies. They just stayed inside their mothers' bellies." It could be that the pale character is actually from Tomorrow's world in Death Stranding 2, and in order for her baby to be born, it had to be transferred to a surrogate. Based on the scene the character shares with Rainy and Doctor, it would be assumed, then, that Doctor is the one who makes this happen.
This would effectively make the baby the child of both Rainy and the pale character and potentially leads to a strong bond between the two characters.
Death Stranding 2 hasn't offered many answers to very much at all at this point, let alone the mysterious pale character in its pre-order trailer. The character's tender moment with Rainy, her DHV Magellan tattoo, and her armored appearance in one of Hideo Kojima's X posts all suggest a deeper role than just background crew. But if she really is the biological mother of Rainy's child — someone from Tomorrow's world who could never give birth on her own — then her connection to Rainy might carry far more emotional weight than expected.
