Looking to learn the rules of how to play Wordle? The first and most important thing players need to know about it is where this game can be found. While Wordle was originally created by an indie developer, this short daily word game was purchased by the New York Times in February 2022. It is still hosted on both the Games site and fans can also now play Wordle through the Crossword app.
This game went viral back in early 2022, so there are plenty of Wordle copycats and clones out there, but this is original and the subject of this article. Other versions will have different answers and may have slightly different rules. Here is how to play the NYT version.
- While it is part of the NYT Games, players don't currently need a subscription to play, but they can log into one if they have it to ensure their progress carries to other devices.
- First, choose a good starting word. This word must be a five-letter English word, not a proper noun, and not an offensive word. Good starter words have a variety of common letters. While both can be used as guesses, Wordle answers won't be repeated and can't be plural nouns ending in S or ES, so these are best avoided as well.
- After a starter word is picked, type it into the first line of the Wordle grid and press enter.
- The letters will change colors.
- Green letters are right while gray letters are wrong. Letters that turn yellow are right but in the wrong place in the word.
- Try another word, typing it into the site and pressing enter. This next word should keep the color-coded clues from the first word in mind while also keeping to the rules of the starting Wordle word strategy from above.
- Players have six total tries to get to the answer.
- Puzzles reset daily at midnight.
