Deltarune developer Toby Fox has provided fans with an update on the game's fourth chapter, which sounds like it is nearing competition. But while the actual development is drawing to a close, it sounds as though Deltarune Chapters 3 and 4 are still a long way from release.
Fox rocketed to developer stardom in 2015 with the release of Undertale, an innovative RPG filled with bullet hell battles and rewarding experiences for not killing monsters. His follow-up RPG, Deltarune, may not have reached the same level of standout success, but it has continued to hold fans' attention by being released in chapters, with the most recent release having come in September 2021. Only two chapters of the retro-style RPG have been released since the game's debut in 2018, but Fox plans to release the next two chapters simultaneously.
In a newsletter to fans penned on July 23 but not released until the end of the month, Fox noted that the fourth chapter is "basically playable minus some polish," which is a step up from the Deltarune update from May. Development of Chapter 4's maps is finished and all the battles are playable, though he noted that one battle needs background work while another requires balancing and improved visuals, and he plans to improve the endings of two others. Additionally, two cutscenes need some work, but it sounds like the adjustments will be minor.
Deltarune Chapters 3 and 4 are Still a Long Way Away
Even with development wrapping up, Fox said actually releasing the next two chapters will still require a lot of extra work and time. Not only will the chapters be released at the same time, but they will be released simultaneously in English and Japanese, which will require some localization work. In addition, he wants the release date to be the same across all platforms, which would be a first for the game, as Deltarune Chapters 1 and 2 both released on PC ahead of consoles.
Despite the long wait, Fox seems to think fans will be pleased once Chapters 3 and 4 are finally available to play, saying their collective debut makes them the biggest release in Deltarune history in terms of play time. He also noted that certain members of the development team have already moved onto Chapter 5 and are drawing up initial plans for the maps and bullet hell patterns. With the progress already being made on Chapter 5, Fox doesn't believe players will ever have to wait this long for a new Deltarune chapter ever again.
