Now that the Infinity Castle arc is being animated, Demon Slayer fans need to brace themselves for some major character deaths. As many may have expected, not every Hashira will survive the battle against Muzan. And while the author, Koyoharu Gotouge, somehow manages to make readers cry over every single death, one particular loss stands out as the most devastating.

While this is not to say that the other deaths weren't emotionally impactful, some were undeniably more tragic than the rest. And when it comes to the Hashira, no death was as heartbreaking as Mitsuri Kanroji's.

While it's not a competition, and each Hashira death was significant, Mitsuri's death was uniquely devastating. Unlike others who passed with a sense of closure, Mitsuri's final moments were marked by unfulfilled dreams and a longing for a future she would never see.

Many Hashira had tragic backstories and emotional endings. But when you consider the ones who died, most got some sort of peace before passing over. For example:

Gyomei Himejima found solace in the spirits of the orphaned children he once failed to protect, knowing they had forgiven him.
Shinobu Kocho sacrificed herself, knowing her death would weaken Douma, ensuring that her allies (Inosuke and Kanao) could finish the fight.

Mitsuri, however, died without that sense of peace.

Despite learning to be proud of her immense strength, she longed for a life of warmth and companionship. Tragically, her final moments were spent in the arms of Obanai Iguro, the man she loved, unable to even hold him back due to her severed arms.

Her final request was heartbreakingly simple — she asked Obanai if she could be his bride in their next life. Unlike other Hashira who could find meaning in their deaths, Mitsuri's story ended with unfulfilled dreams, making her loss especially painful.

Severely wounded, she collapsed in Obanai Iguro's arms. As the battle came to an end, Mitsuri found some solace in knowing that Muzan had been defeated. Yet, the knowledge that she would never experience a peaceful future with Obanai made her passing all the more painful.

Obanai, devastated and now even more blinded from the battle, clung to Mitsuri's broken body. He sobbed desperately, his tears soaking her pale face. He could not save her, and the helplessness consumed him. Through his anguish, he confessed his undying love, promising that in their next lives, he would find her. He swore to protect her, to give her the life she had always dreamed of.

In one of the most emotional moments of the series, after Mitsuri spoke her last words, Obanai, despite the crushing weight of his grief, smiled through his tears and vowed that they would meet again.

And this time I will make you happy, and protect you so you don't die.

Moments later, he too succumbed to his injuries, holding her lifeless body as the darkness consumed him.

Mitsuri And Obanai Get An Unexpected Happy Ending

Reunited in Reincarnation

Though Mitsuri's story ended in tragedy, Gotouge offered fans a bittersweet resolution in the manga's epilogue. Reincarnated in a peaceful world, Mitsuri and Obanai were reborn as a loving couple, enjoying the simple joys of life together.

Their reincarnated forms were shown in Chapter 205 of the manga, where they ran a bustling restaurant, surrounded by warmth and laughter. While the pain of their deaths lingered, knowing they found happiness in a different life brought a sense of closure.
