Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle is taking over the world with its first movie titled Chapter 1: Akaza Returns. As expected, it received great reviews, with fans complimenting its fluid animation, remarkable fights, and emotional intensity. Before the movie hits US theaters this September, it’s time to look back at the Flame Hashira, Rengoku Kyojuro, who died a heroic death fighting Akaza.

Rengoku Kyojuro has a special place in the hearts of Demon Slayer fans. He is greatly missed in the story, but his legacy continues to live on. While he could have been an absolute force of nature in the Infinity Castle arc, he fought Akaza to the best of his abilities without a demon slayer mark in the Mugen Train arc. Now, fans are still wondering why Rengoku Kyojuro did not awaken the demon slayer mark.

The Flame Hashira, Rengoku Kyojuro, is widely recognized for being one of the strongest Hashira of his time. He is respected by his fellow Hashira, not just for his swordsmanship and mastery of all forms of Flame Breathing, but also for his unrivaled mental strength. Even Upper Moon Three Akaza wanted Rengoku Kyojuro to abandon his humanity and become a demon because of his combat prowess and superhuman strength.

In the Mugen Train Arc, Rengoku Kyojuro proves what it truly means to be a strong demon slayer. In the face of an overpowered upper moon like Akaza, he did not show any weakness at all, proving just how unshakable his resolve to protect everyone, including Tanjiro, Zenitsu, and Inosuke, is. Every strike of his sword contains not only immense power but also the burning passion of his indomitable spirit.

Even in Rengoku Kyojuro’s final moments, he never let Akaza claim total victory, nearly restraining him with sheer willpower at the cost of his life. He continued fighting in full force until his last breath, refusing to let Akaza harm anyone. Rengoku Kyojuro’s amazing display of strength in the Mugen Train Arc is even more incredible, considering he did not awaken the elusive Demon Slayer Mark.

Rengoku Kyojuro Did Not Awaken the Demon Slayer Mark

The Timing to Awaken the Mark Is Off

While the Wind Hashira, Sanemi Shinazugawa, thought it was very simple to awaken the demon slayer mark, the reality is that it required extraordinary circumstances and demanded near-fatal conditions. At the time when Rengoku fought Akaza, no demon slayer with a mark existed, making it impossible for Rengoku to tap into the power, despite his phenomenal display of strength in the Mugen Train Arc.

For Rengoku to awaken the demon slayer mark, a Sun Breather like Tanjiro should have awakened the demon slayer mark beforehand. Only then would other demon slayers, including the Flame Hashira like Rengoku, have had the chance to manifest the demon slayer mark. In other words, the timing was off when Rengoku fought Akaza, as Tanjiro never had the mark at the time, which explains why Rengoku never awakened the demon slayer mark.

Rengoku's explosive personality - Demon Slayer

If only Tanjiro had awakened the demon slayer mark in the Mugen Train Arc, it would have been possible for Rengoku to unlock his demon slayer mark as well. With his burning passion for protecting his comrades and his unrivaled commitment to the Hashira duty, he would have faced no trouble awakening the mark. The demon slayer mark could have been a game-changer in his showdown with Akaza.

To this day, fans are still devastated by the death of Rengoku Kyojuro in the Mugen Train Arc. No wonder many are wondering how powerful Rengoku would have become with the demon slayer mark if he were still alive. Rengoku could have awakened the mark under the same circumstances as Giyu Tomioka in the Infinity Castle if only he had survived the Mugen Train arc.

Set your heart ablaze.—Rengoku Kyojuro

Imagine how intense Rengoku and Akaza’s rematch in Infinity Castle will be, with both fighters pushing past their limits. Rengoku potentially awakens the demon slayer mark, while Akaza uses his full destructive power until the end. The showdown would go down as one of the best battles in Demon Slayer’s Infinity Castle arc and would certainly be nothing short of explosive.
