This article contains spoilers for the Demon Slayer manga.
Summary
- Tanjiro's current rank in the Demon Slayer Corps is Hinoe, three ranks higher than his previous ranking.
- Despite his impressive feats and potential, Tanjiro fails to meet the requirements to become a Hashira.
- The Demon Slayer Corps will be disbanded after Muzan's defeat, hindering Tanjiro, Zenitsu, and Inosuke's chances of promotion.
Tanjiro Kamado is set to wreak havoc against Muzan's army of flesh-eating demons in the Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle trilogy. But before he can wield his Nichirin Blade and start killing every demon in sight, one important detail about him needs to be addressed. Fans are curious about Tanjiro’s current rank in the Demon Slayer Corps because it will be crucial to his promotion as a Hashira later down the line.
Unfortunately, it’s been ages since the Demon Slayer anime mentioned anything about Tanjiro’s rank in the Demon Slayer Corps’ hierarchy. Despite his active participation in defeating upper and lower moon demons, there’s little to no detail about his current rank. Perhaps the last time fans heard about the status of his rank, as well as Zenitsu and Inosuke’s, was during the Swordsmith Village arc, and that’s about it.

What Is Tanjiro’s Current Rank in Demon Slayer?
Tanjiro’s Rank Before Infinity Castle
- Tanjiro's rise to the ranks of the Demon Slayer Corps is quick and impressive.
- Tanjiro's rank before the Infinity Castle arc is Hinoe.
Tanjiro Kamado is one of the most powerful demon slayers in the Demon Slayer organization. He has come a long way towards protecting Nezuko, from training under Urokodaki, passing the Final Selection, and officially joining the Demon Slayer Corps to climbing the ranks of the organization along with Inosuke and Zenitsu by defeating powerful demons one after another.
Similar to any other rookie slayer, Tanjiro was once a Mizunoto, starting at the lowest rank of the Demon Slayer Corps. It did not take long before he became a Kanoe, mostly due to his efforts to defeat lower rank five Rui in Natagumo Mountain in season 1 and lower rank one Enmu in the Mugen Train movie. However, after the events of the Entertainment District arc as well as the Swordsmith Village arc, where Tanjiro also actively participated, his rank remained undisclosed.

Fortunately, Demon Slayer's fanbook reveals that Tanjiro and his friends were promoted to the Hinoe rank, jumping three ranks from their previous standing. However, it’s unclear when exactly they officially received the promotion, as the Demon Slayer Corps were already on full alert because of Muzan targeting Nezuko.
Why Tanjiro Never Gets the Hashira Title
Tanjiro Failed to Meet the Requirements
- Despite his active role in the fight against demons, Tanjiro doesn't meet the qualifications to become a Hashira.
- Tanjiro's promotion to Hashira will not happen after the Demon Slayer Corps disbands.
While Tanjiro is undeniably one of the strongest characters in Demon Slayer, he does not meet the necessary requirements to be hailed as a Hashira. Sure, he possesses the strength, passion, and determination to fight toe-to-toe against powerful demons just like the Hashira, but he still needs to go through the proper process to earn official recognition. He could become a Tsuguko (successor to a Hashira) or defeat a member of the 12 Demon Moons alone without any significant help from other demon slayers, or he could take down 50 demons as a Kinoe-ranked slayer.
Anyone who hurts my sister, Hashira or not, I won't let you get away with it.—Tanjiro Kamado
Hence, it’s clear that Tanjiro failed to meet any of the requirements to become a Hashira in Demon Slayer. While he defeated Enmu in the Mugen Train arc and beheaded Hantengu in the Swordsmith Village arc, he was not a Kinoe-ranked slayer at the time. And while both Rengoku Kyojuro and Uzui Tengen wanted to recruit Tanjiro as their Tsuguko at some point, he never officially became one. While Rengoku died, Uzui might have forgotten to submit the necessary paperwork for Tanjiro's promotion following the battle in the Entertainment District.
The Demon Slayer Corps Will Be Disbanded
By the end of the Sunrise Countdown Arc, when Muzan is confirmed dead and defeated, the Demon Slayer Corps will be disbanded. With all the demons gone, excluding Yushiro, there’s no need for the Demon Slayer Corps to exist anymore. Without the organization, Tanjiro’s promotion to the rank of Hashira would not be possible anymore and the same goes for Zenitsu and Inosuke.
But even without the official Hashira recognition, Tanjiro already fought at the same level comparable to theirs. On top of that, most of the Hashira also acknowledged Tanjiro’s potential to become one of them, due to his impressive feats. But as much as fans would love to see Tanjiro as Hashira in Demon Slayer, that’s not going to happen unless the anime makes some changes.
