Summary

  • The original Destiny Tower received a mysterious and surprising update with lights and decorations.
  • This accidental Tower update may be related to a scrapped event named Days of the Dawning and a forgotten schedule date.
  • Bungie has yet to acknowledged the surprise update, leaving players to enjoy it before it's removed.

Destiny players notice that the Tower zone received a mysterious and surprising update, complete with lights and decorations, seven years later. The original Destiny, while still available to play, was largely replaced in 2017 when Destiny 2 launched in full, as Bungie's attention shifted fully to the title.

While Destiny 2 went on to become a massive hit for Bungie, and has seen plenty of content, expansions, and updates over the 7+ years it has been available, some fans continue to reminisce about the original experience. Bungie continues to add legacy Destiny content into the sequel, bringing back classic raids like Vault of Glass and King's Fall as well as exotics like the Icebreaker sniper rifle. Even with legacy content being added, some players still actively log in to Destiny and to those that did, a surprising update was discovered within the Tower.

Reports began appearing online on January 5 that Destiny's hub zone called The Tower recieved a strange and surprising update. After logging in, players saw Ghost-shaped lights strung up in a similar pattern to old Destiny seasonal events like The Dawning, though the social space lacked snow and the Banners now flying were a bit different from the previous live event. In addition, there were no other indicators that a new event was active as players didn't have any new quest indicators or messages highlighting new content.

Accidental Destiny Tower Update Could Be From a Scrapped Event

Naturally, fans began to theorize what was going on, without any official acknowledgment from Bungie or the game itself. Some players, like Breshi and others on Reddit, recalled a scrapped event called Days of the Dawning, which was originally supposed to launch in 2016 following Destiny's popular Taken King expansion. As Breshi shows in the video, the unused assets appear to be similar, if not the same, to what is now appearing in The Tower space. As such, many assume that the event was given a temporary date in the future after the event was scrapped with the intention of removing it entirely at a later date, as Bungie likely assumed Destiny would no longer be available anymore during that time.

At the time of publication, Bungie has not yet acknowledged the Destiny 1 Tower, so it's unknown if anything will change in the meantime. 2017 was a big transitional year for the franchise as all live and seasonal events moved to Destiny 2 after it launched, leaving the original Destiny as it was. So, while this isn't an official event, players can log in and experience an unexpected surprise before Bungie ultimately removes it.
