Summary

  • Bungie is tuning how ability energy is refunded in Destiny 2 to create a more balanced experience for players.
  • Abilities play a crucial role in Destiny 2's sandbox, and their influence can be enhanced through armor, mods, and subclasses.
  • The upcoming update will reduce the energy refunded for slower charging abilities, aiming to make players think more strategically about their builds.

In an effort to make Destiny 2 a more balanced experience for players, Bungie is tuning how ability energy is refunded, starting with update 7.3.0 in Season of the Wish. From offensive to support, abilities play a variety of roles in Destiny 2 and are as equally important to the sandbox as the gunplay. Buildcrafting changed with the release of Lightfall, with abilities governed at a base level by how much of a certain character stat a player has. For instance, a Titan with 100 base Resilience gains a 30% damage reduction, a Hunter with higher numbers in Mobility can use their class ability more often, and a Warlock with high Intelligence gets their Super charged much faster.

Combined with higher-tiered armor and the right mods and subclasses, some players can influence how fast they get their melee, grenade, class, and super energy back. Sometimes, the right combination returns the energy almost instantaneously, creating a permanent uptime for them and allowing the player to essentially “ability spam” through content. Because of this, it is easy to overpower some of Destiny 2’s end-game activities, such as Grandmaster Nightfalls or raids. Although a rare occurrence, one player managed to defeat Nezarec, the final boss of the Root of Nightmares raid, using the right abilities, gear, and weapons.

In the most recent This Week in Destiny blog post, Bungie revealed that it would be tuning abilities to become more consistent for players. According to the post, the company believes that “powerful abilities need to come at a meaningful cost to the player,” as this will make them really think about what their build best needs to work and create more synergy with abilities such as Strand. While things will not change for the abilities with a faster charging time, in update 7.3.0, slower charging abilities will get less energy refunded. For the slower charging grenade and class abilities, it will be 50%, and for melee, 60%.

Bungie also said that these changes to Destiny 2 would only be for melee, grenade, and class abilities, with perks that refund Super energy being untouched. Additionally, perks like Knock ‘Em Down, which fully refunds energy, will not be changed, as well as ones that target one specific ability, such as the one found in the exotic, Shinobu’s Vow.

Bungie has stated that these updates aim to bring balance to Destiny 2 and create more variety in weapons, gear, and abilities for players to experiment with. While there are a lot of nerfs, players will only be able to decide how effective these changes are, especially combined with Destiny 2's new seasonal artifact mods, once the update arrives next week.
