For both newcomers and longtime players, there are some major changes coming to Destiny 2 to get excited about throughout the coming year. Things kick into high gear on July 15 with Destiny 2’s The Edge of Fate expansion, and two major updates as well as another expansion will arrive by the end of 2025. Not only will there be all-new content for players to dive into throughout each of these new updates and expansions, but some of the changes and new features coming to the game will forever change buildcrafting in Destiny 2.

After being teased for a while now, Destiny 2’s Armor 3.0 system will finally arrive in the upcoming The Edge of Fate expansion. More specifically, every new legendary armor and weapon in Destiny 2 from this point onward will have reworked stats, new set bonuses, and gear will be categorized by a new loot-tier system.

Destiny 2’s Legendary Armor Set Bonuses Explained

The gear sets shown in Destiny 2’s The Edge of Fate reveal offer bonuses for wearing two and four matching pieces from a specific set of legendary armor, which leaves room for players to take advantage of a four-piece bonus or mix and match two two-piece bonuses, while still wearing an Exotic armor piece. However, one of the set bonuses revealed so far has a four-piece set bonus that requires activating the two-piece set bonus in order to work, so some armor sets are better off being used as a full set or not at all.

Destiny 2’s New Armor and Weapon Loot Tiers Explained

As players grow accustomed to the difficulties of exploring the new planet, Kepler, and other endgame activities in Destiny 2, higher tiers of legendary gear will become available. So far, there are said to be five tiers of gear available in The Edge of Fate expansion, though this may expand in the near future.

On weapons, higher-tier weapons will generally be stronger, and tier-five weapons will be distinguishable via a unique shader system and a visual on-kill effect. While it hasn’t been confirmed yet, higher tiers of weapons will presumably be more likely to have multiple random weapon perk rolls available in each column. For armor, higher tiers will correlate to the armor having higher overall character stats, and more energy for armor mod slots.
