Summary

  • Destiny 2's Light and Darkness saga ends, paving way for the Fate saga in Edge of Fate.
  • A customizable social space in Destiny 2 could allow players to showcase achievements.
  • Consideration for base-building mechanics in personalized social spaces could enhance player expression.

As the end of Episode Heresy in Destiny 2 approaches, the decade-long Light and Darkness saga that started in the original Destiny is soon coming to an end. When The Edge of Fate expansion for Destiny 2 arrives on July 15, 2025, this will kick off the next epic chapter of the franchise’s ongoing story via the Fate saga, putting the spotlight on the mysterious Nine faction and taking players to the new planet Kepler.

With the Light and Darkness saga finally ending, this seems like the perfect time for Destiny 2 to give players an in-game way to reflect on all of their accomplishments from the past ten years throughout the franchise. Especially after Episode Heresy introduced a new private social space for one of the game’s main characters, it’s arguably time that Destiny 2 sealed the deal and gave players their own space to decorate and gather at. Whether or not this means Destiny 2 should consider experimenting with base-building mechanics, having a personal space that players can customize could be a game-changer for player expression.

Destiny 2’s Rite of the Nine Event Deserves the Onslaught Treatment

Destiny 2’s Onslaught game mode is a permanent addition, and the new Rite of the Nine event arguably deserves the same treatment.

The End of Destiny 2’s Light and Darkness Saga Would be Incomplete Without One New Feature

Episode Heresy Makes the Case for Players’ Own Social Space

Considering that personalized social spaces are a common feature among MMOs, this could naturally be a welcome addition to Destiny 2. However, while there has seemingly always been a need for such a feature in Destiny 2, given the game’s DNA as a pseudo-MMO, the new Episode Heresy storyline has made an even stronger case for this kind of feature. More specifically, after Eris Morn’s flat was added as a new social space in Destiny 2’s Episode Heresy, marking yet another living quarters for one of the game’s main characters that players can visit, it’s arguably time that players got a social space of their own.

Fully Customizable Social Spaces Could be Huge for Player Expression in Destiny 2

  • A personal social space could be the opportunity for Destiny 2 to begin experimenting with base-building mechanics for this new era of the franchise
  • Beyond displaying players’ accomplishments from throughout the Light and Darkness saga, a personal social space could also allow players to showcase their rare loot, like god-roll legendary weapons, and their collection of Exotic weapons
  • Going forward, this could introduce new customization items as rare in-game loot from endgame activities

For players who have been along for the ride since the original Destiny’s release over 10 years ago, the Light and Darkness saga that started back in 2014 finally coming to an end will naturally be an emotional moment. While the Destiny franchise’s ongoing story is still far from over, the transition to the Fate saga in The Edge of Fate expansion shouldn’t pass without giving players a way to celebrate their greatest achievements so far and commemorate some of the beloved characters who have been lost throughout this long journey.

Taking things a step further from introducing a fully customizable, personal social space, this could be the perfect opportunity for the new Kepler planet in Destiny 2, any of the existing social spaces, or even players’ ships, to introduce base-building mechanics to the franchise. If base-building mechanics aren’t in the cards for the Destiny franchise, players having their own remote social space could still take players’ freedom for creative expression to the next level by potentially giving them opportunities to display their collection of god-roll weapons, armor ornaments, and endgame loadouts.

Ultimately, with Destiny 2’s decade-long Light and Darkness saga coming to an end, a personalized social space could be a cozy way for players to commemorate their favorite memories from the franchise thus far. Especially after a new social space was introduced for another one of the game’s main characters in Episode Heresy, players arguably deserve a place to call their own in Destiny 2’s universe by now.
