Destiny 2 Developer Gets Harassed During Livestream

According to The Game Post, the highly-anticipated March 19 Twitch livestream stream devolved into chaos after Bungie Associate Activity Designer Noah Lee unintentionally revealed their Steam username to over one hundred thousand fans. The livestream was supposed to excite players about Destiny 2' s Into the Light update but quickly resulted in the developer receiving a plethora of nasty messages, ranging from sexually explicit to racially offensive. The developer revealed their username after accidentally typing Alt+Tab on their computer. This mistake caused the developer to quickly receive dozens of unwanted friend requests. In an instant, over 45 different Steam friend requests were shown as notifications during the stream.

This innocent mistake led to an unbelievable amount of toxicity and vulgarity. The developer received friend requests from accounts featuring offensive names, like "KILL YOURSELF" and "Bungie Rape Victim." The incident lasted approximately eight minutes during the Twitch livestream. Video game developers are often victims of harassment, with Marvel's Spider-Man 2 developers receiving violent threats earlier this year. However, it's not often a developer's personal username gets leaked and exposed to thousands of fans.

In the past, Bungie has been very vocal and proactive regarding harassment and toxicity towards its developers as well as actual Destiny 2 players. Bungie has taken legal action against multiple individuals, going as far as to ban a Destiny 2 streamer for harassing creators and developers. This firm stance against toxicity also extends to cheating. In 2023, Bungie sued a Destiny 2 cheater for $12 million. Actions like these have helped to maintain the integrity of Destiny 2, ensuring the game is fun and fair for new fans of the series as well as returning veterans.
