Destiny 2's recent reveal of its upcoming Edge of Fate expansion was full of surprises, ranging from an entirely new location as the backdrop for an original multi-year saga to an array of new accessibility features coming to the game. Needless to say, The Edge of Fate's release date of July 15, 2025 is going to be a massive day for Destiny 2, and may even be the fresh start the game has needed for years now. Time will tell, but if anything has the potential to be a return to form for Destiny 2, it's The Edge of Fate. The Edge of Fate's recent reveal didn't just go over the biggest changes and additions coming to the game, as a great number of quality-of-life updates that might be more appreciated by Destiny 2's most dedicated players were also unveiled.
Digging even deeper than those quality-of-life updates, however, Bungie spent a very brief amount of time covering the return of one of its most popular features that many fans have been wondering would ever return — Holofoil weapons. For all intents and purposes, Holofoil weapons are "shiny" variants of weapons that were once obtainable during Destiny 2's Into the Light update but discontinued with the launch of the Final Shape expansion. Now, Destiny 2 is bringing back Holofoil weapons for its Rite of the Nine event and subsequent events set to take place later this year following the release of The Edge of Fate.

Destiny 2 Is Bringing Back Holofoil Weapons
Destiny 2's Rite of the Nine Event Features Holofoil Weapons
Alongside the Edge of Fate reveal showcase, Destiny 2 has introduced the Rite of the Nine event — a limited-time, free event in Destiny 2 that will run until July 15, 2025 when The Edge of Fate launches. The Rite of the Nine focuses on dungeon-based activities and offers both new and returning players an opportunity to engage with challenging content and earn exclusive rewards, among which are unique Holofoil weapons.
Destiny 2 is bringing back Holofoil weapons for its Rite of the Nine event and the subsequent annual Solstice event set to take place later this year following the release of The Edge of Fate.
By completing featured dungeons like Prophecy, Spire of the Watcher, and Ghosts of the Deep, players can obtain Holofoil variants of weapons that feature a special animated skin. Players can obtain Holofoil variants of weapons by completing dungeons on any difficulty, with Adept versions of those weapons being available through the Ultimatum difficulty. As such, players will likely want to chase Adept Holofoil weapons to get the best of both worlds.
Destiny 2's 2025 Solstice Event and Others Will Also Feature Holofoil Weapons
The return of Holofoil weapons isn't stopping with the Rite of the Nine event either, as this year's annual Solstice event will also feature Holofoil weapons for players to acquire. During the Edge of Fate reveal livestream, Bungie even put one of the Solstice Holofoils on display, which features an animated ocean-themed ornament on the weapons that will be available throughout the event. Holofoil weapons will be attainable through other events as well, including Arms Week, which is set to start one week after the launch of The Edge of Fate.
Bungie also indicated that "every major event" will feature Holofoil weapon variants following the release of The Edge of Fate.
The return of Holofoil weapons may not be the biggest announcement to come out of The Edge of Fate reveal, but for longtime players, it's certainly one of the most exciting. These animated weapon variants add a layer of visual flair to Destiny 2's arsenal, and bringing them back through the Rite of the Nine and other major events gives players yet another reason to play the game. More importantly, their return shows that Bungie is paying attention to the details that matter most to its community.
