Exotic class items are a new type of armor that players can earn in Destiny 2: The Final Shape. Instead of presenting unique perks like other Exotics do, these class items provide players with two perks from a curated pool of existing Exotic items, further enhancing build crafting potential.
Like all the best loot in Destiny 2, players will need to spend a bit of time if they want to get a perfectly rolled Exotic class item. Here's everything we know about these so far, including what they provide and how to get them.
Updated July 13, 2024 by Marc Santos: When this article was originally published, the method of obtaining exotic class items was not yet officially revealed, though at the time, Bungie did say that Destiny 2's exotic class items were going to become available through a then-unspecified mission. The mission has now become available, and everyone who owns The Final Shape can attempt it, provided that they've finished the DLC's campaign and a few other pre-requisites.

The final encounter in Destiny 2: The Final Shape's campaign requires players to juggle a multitude of mechanics while trying to defeat the boss.
How To Get Exotic Class Items in Destiny 2
The main way of getting exotic class items in Destiny 2 is to finish the Dual Destiny mission. This is a lot easier said than done, though — this mission requires two players, and it's basically a mad sprint to the finish line while fighting hordes of enemies and solving raid-style puzzles. Communication is key here, and you likely won't be able to finish it without proper coordination with your partner.
After you finish Dual Destiny, all chests in the Pale Heart will now have a chance to drop a Destiny 2 exotic class item. However, as of writing, the drop rate is abysmal, and you'll likely have to open dozens of chests just to get a single drop. Players can either farm all the chests across the Pale Heart regions, or they can reload one area to reset the existing chests there. Either way, it will take time to farm exotic class items via chests unless Bungie decides to increase the drop rates.
All Exotic Class Items in Destiny 2
Each Exotic class item has a specific pool of perks for each class, and they usually contain perks from the Exotic armor pieces of other classes. If you've ever wanted to use a Destiny 2 Hunter build with Caliban's Hand and Synthoceps, now's your chance. Here are the known Exotic perks available for each class item:

The perks on Exotic class items are slightly watered down compared to the actual Exotics. Spirit of Synthoceps, for example, does not include the extra weapon-handling stats from Synthoceps itself. Despite this, players can get absurdly powerful combinations from their Exotic class items, provided they're lucky enough.
Despite Destiny 2's story ending on the Excision mission, Bungie still has plenty in store for the franchise. Players are about to experience the first episode of the game directly following the end of the Light and Dark saga, and once that goes live on the second week of The Final Shape, players should be able to start farming their Exotic class items as well.
