Since the passing of Lance Reddick, Destiny 2 players have been leaving tributes to the actor all over social media in appreciation for his work as Zavala, and the latest tribute has been a group effort left on a popular Reddit pixel art canvas. It is known the game's current season, Season of the Deep, is the final season Reddick got the chance to work on before his death in March 2023. While it isn't clear what Bungie plans to do with Zavala in the future, it is clear from tributes such as the Reddit pixel art that players will ensure Reddick's memory lives on.
Destiny 2, as of this writing, is in the back-half of Season of the Deep as the seasonal narrative has concluded and the Solstice event has begun. The seasonal story saw plenty of massive revelations about The Witness, its origins and goals, Xivu Arath's relationship with her siblings, and the role Savathun still has to play. Bungie is set to reveal more about what's to come for the remainder of 2023 with its next showcase stream, set for August 22, 2023, that will offer a first proper look into The Final Shape.
The latest tribute to Reddick was created on the r/Place subreddit pixel canvas, which has become a constantly evolving space due to interactions by users driving its artistic direction. Within the canvas, a group of Destiny 2 players was able to leave the late actor a tribute by replicating the double-headed eagle design on Commander Zavala's shoulder plate. It is accompanied by Reddick's name, the year's of his birth and death, and Destiny's Latin motto of "Per Audacia Ad Astra," which roughly translates to "to the stars through boldness."
Commander Zavala has been a mainstay in the Destiny universe since the pre-release alphas and betas for the first game, with the Vanguard commander becoming a fixture in the Last City's Tower for years to come. He would begin to take more of a direct role in the game's narrative with the launch of Destiny 2 as he led efforts to reorganize guardian forces and retake the Last City following its takeover by Ghaul and the Red Legion. Times hadn't been easy for the Titan Vanguard, either, as he would be forced to face his past and belief in the Traveler during subsequent expansions and seasons while trying to prepare the city as best he could for The Witness' arrival.
Given how beloved Reddick was by the larger gaming community, along with the vocal Destiny 2 community, it would not be surprising if tributes to the actor continue appearing for the remainder of 2023. Guerrilla Games recently added its own tribute to Reddick in the Burning Shores DLC for Horizon Forbidden West, in which he portrayed the key supporting character of Sylans.
Destiny 2 is currenlty available for PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
