It's a big day for PC players, as Bungie's popular first-person shooter franchise is finally available after a month and a half delay. Though the content remains mostly on par with its console counterparts, PC players are able to extract a bit more horsepower from Destiny 2 thanks in large part to uncapped framerates and 4K visuals. Of course, since this is a PC release, dataminers have already burrowed deep into the game's files and managed to extract some fairly interesting information regarding Bungie's popular franchise.
After digging through roughly 26,000 audio files from the PC version of Destiny 2, Reddit user TheEcumene discovered a cache of audio that referenced content that isn't currently available in the game. One such location in question is Phobos, one of the moons of the planet Mars. While the moon served as the location for the Black Shield map from Destiny, new voice lines included in the mined files hint that a future expansion or content update could actually send players there.
Arach Jalaal and Executor Hideo, two of the three faction leaders in the Tower each have six lines a piece talking about this location from congratulating players on a successful mission to Phobos, to prepping players before undertaking the journey there. Hideo even goes on to mention that players can find a particular target on the moon as well. What isn't clear from these audio files is whether or not Phobos is intended to be a one-off mission similar to the Tower missions at the beginning and end of the campaign, or if this moon is going to follow a location like the Dreadnaught, which was eventually added as an entirely new patrol zone for players to explore.
With a community starving for new content and things to do, this information is no doubt exciting. It should be noted however that at least some of the datamined audio files may actually pertain to content that was ultimately cut from the game or not intended for use. Still, with two confirmed add-ons on the way and likely more updates beyond that, anything is certainly possible.
For now, expect Bungie to remain tight-lipped, as the studio typically does not share details on upcoming content until it is good and ready. After the announcement of a season 2 of content this past weekend and with the first DLC pack expected to arrive around the same time later this year, perhaps fans will finally get confirmation as to where the game is going from here sooner rather than later.
Destiny 2 is now available for PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.
