Summary
- Destiny 2 will release the Edge of Fate expansion on July 15, bringing new abilities and weapons.
- The following Renegades expansion, which will have a Star Wars theme, is set to release in December.
- Concerns have arisen within the community regarding the impact of the Star Wars crossover on Destiny 2's lore and identity.
The Destiny 2 community has finally gotten a proper look at the year ahead for the game, but the heavily Star Wars-inspired Renegades expansion that was revealed during the recent developer livestream event was on very few fans' bingo cards. While players will get to jump into an all-new adventure themed around the Nine when the Edge of Fate expansion releases later this year on July 15, Destiny 2's Renegades expansion, releasing in December, will offer new Star Wars cosmetics, a distinctly space western flavor, and lightsabers.
Destiny 2 is entering a brave new era no matter which way players look at it, with last year's Final Shape expansion bringing the game's decade-long Light and Darkness Saga to a close. With the Witness defeated and the universe saved, fans have been eager to learn more about what's next for the world of Destiny 2 following the climax of the current Episode: Heresy. The recent developer livestream event officially unveiled the Edge of Fate expansion which launches on June 15, showing off a new destination to be discovered in the solar system, some interesting new abilities, several new weapons, and much more.
Destiny 2 Reveals Edge of Fate Expansion Release Date and Gameplay
Bungie shows off brand-new gameplay and confirms the release date for the Edge of Fate, the next major expansion for Destiny 2.
What really had players floored, though, was the brief reveal of the second expansion that will be releasing later in 2025, Renegades. Destiny 2 has more than just dabbled in franchise crossovers across the past few years, but Renegades appears to be an entire expansion themed heavily around the Star Wars IP in particular. It was described during the livestream as "a definitive Destiny expansion that is part of the Fate Saga, and will push it forwards in important ways," as well as "an homage" to a beloved franchise that has long served as a source of inspiration to Destiny 2's creators. While brief, its trailer drew attention to a trio of Guardians aboard what appears to be a Cabal ship as the iconic sirens of a Star Destroyer blare in the background, with the Guardians geared up with new Star Wars-themed skins and the Warlock igniting a lightsaber near the end.
Destiny 2's Renegades Expansion May Be Its Most Controversial One Yet
The expansion is an officially licensed crossover with Lucasfilm Games which will apparently bring in a number of new characters along with evolved gameplay mechanics and social activities, though what exactly that entails is wholly unknown to fans at the moment, and will likely remain that way until the expansion's own dedicated livestream event in September. Bungie explains that Renegades, as well as the other future expansions in Destiny 2's Fate Saga, are intended to move away from the game's existing formulas and make room for new creative opportunities.
Understandably, though, questions and concerns have quickly arisen among the Destiny 2 community. Unfortunately, it's not yet clear what crossover expansions like this might mean for Destiny 2's own lore and canon, nor whether players will somehow find themselves in the actual Star Wars universe. Whatever the case, though, the nature of this expansion has already given way to considerable controversy among the community, with many fans concerned about what this might mean for the long-term future of Destiny 2 and its distinct identity as a game and world of its own.
