- A Star Wars-themed expansion arrives in December 2025.
Bungie has confirmed that a new event, The Rite of the Nine, is now available in Destiny 2 for all players. The news comes from the recent Bungie livestream, where the Destiny 2 community was treated to the first glimpse of the new direction of the game following the conclusion of the Light and Darkness Saga.
During the presentation, the team at Bungie released the 2025-2026 roadmap for Destiny 2, dubbed the Year of Prophecy. Many gamers will no doubt be excited to dive into the next chapter of the long-running saga, but the first full expansion since last year’s Final Shape is still a few months away. However, Bungie has launched a new in-game event designed to whet the Guardians’ appetite over what's to come.
Destiny 2 Copyright Lawsuit Motion to Dismiss Denied Due to Vaulted Content
A federal judge denies Bungie's motion to dismiss a Destiny 2 copyright lawsuit against the company, thanks to the game's infamous content vault.
Running from May 6, 2025, until July 15, 2025, the Rite of the Nine event is a free update that's available to all players in Destiny 2. Three dungeons will be on a weekly rotation throughout the event, which have been listed as: Ghosts of the Deep, Prophecy, and Spire of the Watcher. These dungeons have been redesigned with three difficulty settings, allowing Guardians of all skill levels to participate, including those who prefer to explore the world of Destiny 2 as a solo player. As players tackle each map, they will be rewarded with new weapons that can be carried into the Edge of Fate expansion when it launches on July 15. Guardians also have the chance to earn a uniquely created Displate by community artist, Gabriel Flauzino.
Destiny 2: Rite of the Nine Event Details
- Available: May 6, 2025, to July 15, 2025
-
Dungeons on weekly rotation:
- Ghosts of the Deep
- Prophecy
- Spire of the Watcher
-
Difficulty levels:
- Explorer
- Eternity
- Ultimatum
The difficulty levels throughout the Rite of the Nine Event are broken down into three categories - Explorer, Eternity, and Ultimatum. Explorer Mode is for those Guardians looking for a casual experience with little puzzle solving and softer enemies. Eternity Mode is the current difficulty option for players who regularly play as a fire team. Ultimatum Mode is the equivalent of the Grandmaster challenges, and players can earn special titles and Triumphs upon completion of these grueling levels. The types of loot and rewards players can expect will scale alongside the difficulty, with the pinnacle being reserved for the Guardians looking to take on the Ultimatum dungeons.
The changes seen within the Rite of the Nine event serve as a preview of what the community can expect to see from the upcoming Destiny 2: Edge of Fate expansion. By implementing the new stages of difficulty, Bungie is hoping that the new Fate Saga can encourage new and casual players to pick up Destiny 2, while still keeping its veterans happy.
Along with the Rite of the Nine event and Edge of Fate expansion, Bungie confirmed that another expansion will follow on December 2, 2025. The Destiny 2: Renegades will be a Star Wars-inspired story and is an officially licensed crossover with Lucasfilm Games. A full reveal will be held in September, but Bungie has teased that elements from Disney’s space opera could appear throughout Sol.
