The following contains MAJOR spoilers for Destiny 2's Final Shape campaign.

Destiny 2's Final Shape expansion is one of its deepest yet, with an extensive amount of character development, an emotional story full of twists and turns, and even the return of everyone's favorite Exo, Cayde-6. The Final Shape's campaign takes players on a rather lengthy journey in pursuit of the Witness through the Pale Heart of the Traveler, all while saving their Guardian friends from themselves as they battle their demons and the pain of their past. If players manage to make it to the end of the campaign, they'll get the opportunity to complete several epilogue missions before participating in Excision, a 12-player activity that sees the Witness brought to their fulfilling end in one of Destiny 2's most cinematic moments to date.

As the encounter with and defeat of the Witness has now been ten years in the making, concluding the story arc that began with the first Destiny, it might seem like Destiny 2 has nowhere to go at this point. On the contrary, the cutscenes that play once the Excision mission has been completed explain a lot about where Destiny 2 might end up in the near future, and it seems there is still plenty on the horizon for players to look forward to.

How Destiny 2's Future Is Set Up After the Final Shape

Cayde-6 Is Gone and Crow Has Taken Up the Mantle of Hunter Vanguard

Apart from the death of the Witness, one of the biggest moments of The Final Shape's grand finale is the departure of Cayde-6 and Crow accepting the role of Hunter Vanguard. Before he leaves, Cayde grants his Light to the player's fallen Ghost and then fades away. Crow is later seen wearing the garb of the Hunter Vanguard, so he will be taking on the role that Cayde once used to fill. This will be a significant change for the world of Destiny 2, but at least the position has finally been filled.

Several Threats Still Loom on the Horizon After The Final Shape

After the main cinematics play following the Excision mission in The Final Shape, the game moves to a shot of the player's Guardian sitting on a balcony looking out at the Traveler. If players wait for a bit, Crow begins relaying information to Zavala about several threats that still loom on the horizon. The biggest issue now that the Witness is gone is that a massive "power vacuum" exists that will need to be filled by someone or something. Crow mentions that Xivu Arath is still out there somewhere and that Eramis, the Fallen Kell of the Darkness-aligned House Salvation, is nowhere to be found.

Meanwhile, Savathun and her Lucent Brood are doing what they can to take control of the Traveler's Pale Heart. Furthermore, now that the Witness is dead, the Scorn and Taken have no leader, which could potentially result in chaos. This all means that Xivu Arath will eventually show herself and there will undoubtedly be a confrontation, House Salvation will continue to tear itself apart, another major encounter with Savathun is likely, and the Scorn and Taken may become an even greater threat than they were before.

Crow also speaks of an aurora that is now bleeding out of the Traveler and sending both Light and Darkness into the open space above Earth. When the aurora was formed, "anomalous matter," which has now been confirmed to be "echoes," shot out of the Traveler, and Crow and his team have been hard at work in pursuit of it. It can be assumed that each of Destiny 2's episodes will involve seeking out and investigating these echoes, with the first one involving the Vex. There is clearly plenty in store for Destiny 2, and it's likely to come into play very soon.
