Less than two weeks away from release, Bungie has released a ViDoc to offer an in-depth dive into the changes and new additions coming to Destiny 2's latest expansion, Lightfall. While topics like Destiny 2's new subclass have been covered extensively before, the ViDoc offers a rare insight into Bungie's design decisions that bring a unique flavor to every single expansion of Destiny 2.
Lightfall is the next major expansion for Destiny 2, where the conflict between Light and Darkness will escalate to a new degree, as Guardians will clash directly against the forces of the Witness. Joining the ranks of the Witness is the former Cabal Emperor Calus, who will become a Disciple of the Witness in Lightfall and lead his Shadow Legion to wage war in a city hidden on Neptune. The cyberpunk-themed city of Neomuna will serve as the primary battleground in Lightfall, and players will have to utilize the powers of Strand to safely traverse the verticality of the city while dispatching the dangerous new foes.
The ViDoc, appropriately titled "As Light Falls," focuses mainly on the narrative aspect of the expansion above everything. The developers speak quite candidly about how the Witness is moving to unravel the secrets of the Light and the Traveler and how the events of Lightfall will shape the future of Destiny 2 moving into the Final Shape expansion next year. Bungie reiterated that The Final Shape will be the closing act for the Light and Darkness saga in Destiny 2 and that the game will move to newer frontiers after the conclusion. The developers then move on to talk about Strand and how the rumors of a Poison-based subclass strove them to find something a bit more unique.
The art team cut no corners while designing the sleek and aerodynamic architecture of Neomuna, such as creating an Arcade-themed Lost Sector and a Pouka Pond which contains the elusive, fish-like creatures first seen in the Beyond Light expansion. Interestingly, two new characters were introduced in the ViDoc, named Nimbus and Rohan, a pair of Cloudstriders. Cloudstriders are the elusive defenders of Destiny 2's Neomuna, so this identity reveal will come as a surprise to most players.
Destiny 2's Season of Defiance is set around the defense of the European Dead Zone, and how being a Guardian is more about defending the people of the Last City. Lightfall will introduce major shifts in build crafting in Destiny 2, and sneak peeks of the management systems were included in the ViDoc. Furthermore, Guardian Ranks were also touched upon. The upcoming in-game commendation and appraisal system will allow players to complete objectives to rise in ranks to display their proficiency. All in all, Lightfall is shaping up to be a massive adventure for Destiny 2 fans and thankfully, they don't have to wait that long.
Destiny 2 is available now for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S. The Lightfall expansion is set to launch on all platforms on February 28.
