Summary
- Fans are buzzing about Destiny 3 after a cryptic tweet from Bungie's creative director hinting at future plans.
- Destiny 2's latest expansion, The Final Shape, brings a decade-long story to a close with new content.
A perplexing tweet made by Bungie's executive creative director has fans believing that Destiny 3 is in the cards at the Sony subsidiary. This potentially exciting news comes along with the release of Destiny 2's newest expansion, The Final Shape, which will bring the space epic's decade-long story to a close.
Although The Final Shape will serve as the finale of the Light and Dark Saga, Bungie has teased that the series will continue in some form or fashion. Fans have speculated that this means an entirely new story will begin in Destiny 2 following The Final Shape's conclusion next February, akin to Final Fantasy 14's rebirth with the upcoming Dawntrail expansion. Others, however, are starting to think that the release of Destiny 3 is the more likely scenario.
Today, Luke Smith, Bungie's executive creative director, took to Twitter to celebrate the release of The Final Shape and to thank fans for their continued support over the years. All seemed normal until the Destiny community noticed something peculiar about the text in a particular tweet. In it, the word "Hope" is written and capitalized three times, causing the fanbase to begin its hunt into what this may signify—if anything at all.
Fans Are Speculating That Destiny 3 May Come After the Final Shape Concludes
After years of continuous content, Destiny 2 has maintained a dedicated playerbase by combining expert storytelling with addictive gameplay. If Destiny 3 is being discussed behind the scenes, Bungie has a golden opportunity to bring in heaps of new players by providing a current-gen point of entry into the game's expansive world.
At present, Destiny 2 servers are struggling to keep up as swarms of players log on to play Echoes, the first part of The Final Shape expansion. There are over 280,000 players logged into the game on Steam at the time of writing, close to Destiny 2's all-time Steam concurrent player count of 316,750 set back in February 2023.
Along with concluding the Light and Dark Saga, The Final Shape expansion for Destiny 2 will also bring a new Raid and a new Strike. It will also introduce a new Power system and will bring back some popular weapons that had previously been retired. Additionally, the Prismatic Subclass will be added, marking the first new Subclass since the introduction of Strand during The Witch Queen. The community will likely have to wait for any confirmation about Destiny 3 until early 2025 and the completion of this new expansion.
