Summary

  • Destiny mobile game, "Destiny Rising," is still in development, not canceled, per a leak by insider Kurakasis.
  • Bungie's layoffs apparently did not impact plans for the mobile game.
  • Trend of major franchises moving to mobile gaming market suggests Destiny may follow suit eventually.

The long-rumored Destiny mobile game is still in the works under the title "Destiny Rising," a new leak reports. Recently, there had been speculation that the unannounced Destiny mobile game may have been canceled.

Destiny is one of the most popular IPs in the free-to-play online FPS genre today. The latest expansion for Destiny 2, named The Final Shape, came out earlier this year to a riveting reception from critics. Back in 2022, the rumors of a mobile game set in the Destiny universe first surfaced, with multiple job listings hinting towards the same. Fast-forward to 2024, layoffs at developer Bungie had fans worried that projects, such as the rumored mobile game, may have been canceled. However, the latest development looks to shun these cancelation rumors.

How The Final Shape Sets Up the Future of Destiny 2

Even though the Light and Darkness Saga is officially over for Destiny 2, The Final Shape sets up the game's future with even more confrontations.

According to insider Kurakasis, Bungie's plans to bring the Destiny experience onto mobile phones have not yet been shelved. In a tweet, they stated that the rumored mobile game is still in development and has not been canceled, putting recent speculation to bed. The source revealed that the rumored Destiny game, being developed by Bungie and Chinese studio NetEase, is titled Destiny Rising.

Destiny Mobile Game May Be in the Works Despite Recent Doubts

Based on the new leak, it appears that Bungie's mobile gaming ambitions were not rocked in spite of the recent downsizing of the team. In July, the Destiny developer conducted a major round of job cuts, marking the second time layoffs hit the studio within the span of a year. This particular layoff spree also resulted in the departure of veteran Bungie executives, who had been there since the developer's Halo: Reach days. Interestingly, the Sony-owned studio was later reported to still be hiring for certain roles post these layoffs, hinting that certain unannounced games may still be progressing steadily to the next phase. Such moves definitely bode well for projects like the rumored Destiny mobile adaptation.

Over the past decade, certain major game franchises, such as Call of Duty and Fortnite, have made the jump from consoles and PC to mobile. On the other hand, leading stakeholders like Rockstar Games-parent company Take-Two have made acquisitions in a bid to expand their mobile games portfolio in the coming years. This shifting trend, which aims to make the most of the mobile gaming market's lucrative potential, suggests that it may only be natural for IPs like Destiny to make their way onto mobile phones eventually.
