The CCO of indie publisher Devolver Digital recently expressed excitement about the next Nintendo console, as well as the possibility of developing games for the new hardware. After years of speculation about what would come after the highly successful Nintendo Switch, gamers finally got official confirmation that new Nintendo hardware is on the way a few months ago, when Nintendo President Shuntaro Furukawa revealed that this mystery console would be shown at some point before the end of the current fiscal year.

This means that fans will get to see the new Nintendo console by March 31, 2025, but no concrete details about the reveal date have been shared just yet. Past rumors have hinted that the Nintendo Switch successor would be unveiled in September, but this ultimately proved to not be the case. More recently, a leaker claimed that Nintendo is still on track to reveal its next console by the end of 2024, and that the curtain could be pulled back later this month.

In the meantime, Devolver Digital COO Graeme Struthers recently spoke with Gamereactor (as translated by Nintendo Everything) during a preview event for its upcoming indie title Neva. In addition to praising the Nintendo Switch for being more “indie-friendly” than other systems, Struthers expressed his excitement about seeing what the company has in store for its next mainline console. He says that he would like to see more Devolver Digital-published titles on Nintendo’s future hardware, but that everyone will have to wait and see what happens.

Devolver Digital CCO is Excited for Nintendo Switch 2

Even though the next Nintendo system hasn’t properly been revealed yet, there is already at least one game in development for it, courtesy of fellow indie studio Pathea Games. Its upcoming life-sim title My Time at Evershine was confirmed for the tentatively named Switch 2 back in September, and it recently surpassed its Kickstarter funding goals, likely in part thanks to its status as one of the first video games being actively developed for the next Nintendo console.

Meanwhile, there have been several leaks and rumors surrounding the Nintendo Switch 2’s look and technical specifications, including possible mock-up images that don’t stray too far from the current Switch’s console/handheld hybrid design. Select developers reportedly got to see a demo of the Nintendo Switch 2 in action during Gamescom 2023 last fall, and some third-party companies are said to have already received development kits for the upcoming Nintendo hardware. Everyone else might have to take Devolver Digital’s excitement toward the Switch successor console as a promising sign until Nintendo finally reveals its newest gaming system.
