Summary
- Dexter: Original Sin may need to run as long as the original series for James Doakes to appear, possibly in season 7.
- James Doakes won't show up in the prequel series until 1997 due to conflicting timelines.
- Despite fans' anticipation for Doakes' return, a time jump could disrupt the storyline of Dexter: Original Sin.
Dexter: Original Sin will feature a slew of younger versions of characters from the original series, but there's one key character who won't be turning up in the prequel series for a while, and that is Dexter's eventual nemesis, James Doakes. In fact, Dexter: Original Sin will likely have to run for as long as the original series for Doakes to have a significant role. Dexter ran between 2006-2013, and the events of the show mirrored the real passage of time.
James Doakes was killed off in Dexter season 2, which would've been in 2007, and it is believed that Doakes joined Miami Metro Homicide a decade prior to his death after serving in the special forces. Dexter: Original Sin's first season will take place in 1991, meaning Doakes can't turn up until 1997 at the earliest, so if the prequel series opts for a similar real-time pacing, Doakes would probably not turn up until season 7, if the show even runs for that long.
Angel Batista appeared to confirm the timeframe for James Doakes' arrival at Miami Metro In The Final Episode Of Dexter New Blood
James Doakes' past was always shrouded in mystery in the original Dexter series, apart from some revelations about his previous relationship with Maria LaGuerta. However, it was believed Doakes didn't turn up to work at Miami Metro Homicide until much later than the rest of the core characters. Dexter: Original Sin will see the return of all the regular cast of characters from the original Dexter series except for James Doakes. This is in order to stay faithful to the timeline, and it's a shame because it would be great to see more of Doakes' character, especially as he only appeared in the first two seasons of the original show. However, this doesn't rule out his potential return at some point, thanks to a comment made by a key character in Dexter: New Blood's finale.
Angel Batista was relaxing at his home in the iconic location of Miami when he received a call from Chief Angela Bishop, who informed him that Dexter Morgan was actually alive and living in Iron Lake. Batista told Bishop that his colleague and ex-wife, Maria LaGuerta, had suspected Dexter was the Bay Harbor Butcher, and she never believed her former lover, James Doakes, was capable of the crimes he was accused of committing. Bishop asked Batista what he thought about Doakes possibly being innocent, and he revealed a key piece of information that revealed their history working together, which seems to confirm when Doakes started working at Miami Metro Homicide:
I sat next to him for 10 years.
The Bay Harbor Butcher case took place in 2007, so that suggests Doakes began his stint at Miami Metro in 1997, which is a long way ahead of the beginning of Dexter: Original Sin's timeline in 1991.

The original Dexter series ran for eight long seasons, finally coming to an end in 2013. James Doakes was killed off during season 2 in 2007, after 10 years of service at Miami Metro Homicide. This makes Doakes' potential appearance in Dexter: Original Sin a long way off, and he possibly won't turn up at all, unless the prequel series is just as successful as the original series. If Dexter: Original Sin follows a similar pattern to the original show, and represents the passage of time in the real time format, Doakes' first appearance would likely be in season 7 at the earliest.
Of course, Dexter: Original Sin could choose to have a significant time jump to allow for Doakes to return, but if it does this, it could potentially miss out on key parts of Dexter's troubled backstory, which is bound to form the major crux of the new show. Doakes is a great character, and it would be a treat for fans to see the younger version of his character, but he's not important enough to risk causing a jarring impact on the audience with a time jump.
If Dexter; Original Sin does run for multiple seasons, it would be a popular choice to bring James Doakes back, but his appearance needs to make sense due to the constraints of the timeline. Fans would love to see what initially gave Doakes the creeps about Dexter, and what exactly happened between the pair prior to the original series. It would also be interesting to see how Doakes and LaGuerta's relationship began. These particular incidents could potentially bridge the gap between the end of Dexter: Original Sin and the start of the original Dexter series.
