Dexter: Original Sin will premiere on Paramount+ with Showtime on December 13, 2024. The teaser trailer for the new prequel series was unveiled this week, and fans are excited to see what will play out over the 10 episode first season. There are bound to be revelations about Dexter's past that weren't already known, and it's also possible that certain characters knew Dexter was a killer. In the original Dexter series, it was never certain if Harry Morgan's close friend, Tom Matthews, knew about Dexter's dark passenger. Dexter: Original Sin could reveal that he did know, or at least had strong suspicions.
The majority of the original main characters from Dexter have been confirmed to return in Dexter: Original Sin, and it looks like the key character, Tom Matthews, might've finally been cast as well, with Matthew William signed on to play a Miami Metro Police Officer who bears a striking resemblance to a young Geoff Pierson, who played Matthews in the original Dexter series. Tom Matthews knew Harry Morgan well, so he could've been privy to the code during the 90s timeline, in which Dexter: Original Sin is set.
Harry Morgan Asked Tom Matthews To Protect Dexter And It's Possible He Knew He Was A Killer All Along
Many fans believe Tom Matthews knew more than he was letting on about Dexter. Harry Morgan asked Matthews to protect Dexter and Debra before he died, and this could've included making sure Harry's code was never revealed. Giant Freakin Robot's article 'Dexter's Boss Knew Who The Serial Killer Was All Along', theorized about how much Matthews actually knew about Dexter:
One might even ask how Harry could possibly expect Matthews to take care of Dexter if he didn’t know about the boy’s deadly hobbies.
This is a very interesting point, as it would be impossible for Matthews to fully protect Dexter if he didn't know about his dark passenger. Geoff Pierson, who played Tom Matthews, also had an opinion on what his character might know in an interview, via Wetpaint Entertainment, which appeared on the Dexter Daily website back in 2013:
Well, I think that’s the big question. That’s what I think a lot of people wondered about, just how much did Matthews know since he knew him since he was a child and his dad was my partner. I’m still waiting to see whether that comes out or not. I don’t know.
The main reason for fans' suspicions about Matthews' potential knowledge of Dexter's deadly deeds was due to his reaction to Maria LaGuerta's belief that the forensic analyst could be the Bay Harbor Butcher. Matthews wouldn't entertain LaGuerta's suspicions about Dexter, and he didn't appear to question LaGuerta's mysterious death either. There is a possibility he was in denial over who Dexter really was, and that can also be said for Angel Batista and Joey Quinn.

Dexter: Original Sin will see a 20-year-old Dexter Morgan begin an internship in the forensic department at Miami Metro Homicide in 1991, where his adoptive father, Harry Morgan, is a detective. Tom Matthews was also at Miami Metro Homicide during this timeline, and the prequel series could reveal some interesting backstory about what Matthew's actually knew about Dexter.
There has been a lot of mystery surrounding the character of Tom Matthews heading into Dexter: Original Sin, with very little information about who will officially be playing him and how prominently he'll feature in the prequel series. The importance of his character can't be downplayed in Dexter: Original Sin, and it could turn out that he knew a lot of Dexter's secrets, or had suspicions, due to his close friendship with Harry. Christian Slater, who is portraying Harry Morgan in Dexter: Original Sin, revealed in a recent interview with Collider, that there will be things about his character that weren't known previously, and this could possibly link back to Matthews:
There’s also things that Dexter doesn't know that happened with Harry as a character, so those are the things that I'm really excited about and do give, I think, a greater insight into who this guy was.
Harry Morgan and Tom Matthews' relationship needs to be explored in Dexter: Original Sin. In the lead up to the prequel series air date, much more has been made about his friendship with partner, Bobby Watt (Reno Wilson) and the chief of Miami Metro Homicide, Aaron Spencer, played by Patrick Dempsey. Only time will tell if Morgan Snr and Matthews were as close as it was suggested they were in the original Dexter series.
