Summary

  • Dexter is alive in Dexter: Resurrection, facing a lengthy prison stay for his crimes.

  • Dexter could assist law enforcement in tracking down serial killers to extend the life of the sequel series.

Michael C. Hall recently shocked fans at San Diego Comic Con 2024 when he announced he would be reprising the role of Dexter Morgan in a sequel series called Dexter: Resurrection. Fans were led to believe that Dexter died of a gunshot wound to the chest at the end of the limited series, Dexter: New Blood. However, that now seems to not be the case at all, and speculation is rife about how the titular serial killer will be brought back and what the story will be in the sequel series, with a brand-new dynamic probably needed for the show to be a success.

Dexter is actually alive in Dexter: Resurrection and he'll be facing a long time behind bars for his many crimes. However, the new run will not be a limited series, which raises questions about what exactly Dexter will be doing when audiences see him again in the summer of 2025, when the show airs on Paramount + with Showtime. Clyde Phillips will be the showrunner on Dexter: Resurrection, and filming will begin in January 2025.

Dexter Could Be On The Run After Recovering From His Life Threatening Injuries

Dexter: New Blood ended with Dexter bleeding out on the snowy ground in the woods of Iron Lake in upstate New York. This was supposed to be the end of Dexter's story, with showrunner, Clyde Phillips even confirming the serial killer's fate in an interview with Deadline:

I have three words for you: Dexter is dead. I wouldn’t do that to the audience. It would be dishonest. Here, there is no question that this is the finale of Dexter. Dexter is dead.

The major retcon of Dexter not being dead will see Dexter: Resurrection pick up immediately after the end of Dexter: New Blood. Dexter will be in a critical condition and requiring a lot of medical assistance, but when Dexter does recover, he will probably be facing up to the death penalty in the state of Florida for all the murders he committed. However, Dexter: Resurrection intends to run for multiple seasons, so there isn't much of a show if Dexter is locked up in a prison cell awaiting execution. This means it's highly likely Dexter will probably be on the run in Dexter: Resurrection, with the key character, Angel Batista, and the rest of law enforcement on his tail.

If Dexter does go on the run, there's a chance he will go in search of his teenage son, Harrison, to try and mend their relationship. Harrison could end up on Dexter's kill table as a result of nearly killing his father, or the creative team may choose to use some of their ideas for the scrapped Harrison spin off, alongside Dexter's continuing story. Alternatively, Dexter: Resurrection could completely change the dynamic of the show and go in a different direction, which could guarantee longevity for the sequel series.

Dexter Could Help Law Enforcement Track Down Serial Killers In Dexter: Resurrection

Dexter Morgan

In addition to being an excellent blood spatter analyst in the original Dexter series, Dexter Morgan was also an incredible unofficial detective, who discovered who the villains of the Dexter series were long before Miami Metro Homicide caught on. Dexter knew how killers operated, because he was also a killer, albeit with the constraints of Harry's code, so he knew how to track them down. Dexter: Resurrection could see law enforcement use Dexter's killer instincts to help track down other serial killers and that could be the unique new concept for the show moving forward.

Instead of Dexter languishing in a prison cell, he could be helping law enforcement find some of America's worst serial murderers. If Dexter chooses to co-operate, they might be willing to commute his sentence to life in prison instead of the dreaded death penalty in a potential return to the iconic location of Miami. It's unlikely they would allow Dexter to kill, which could cause a potential issue for the sequel series, as the whole point is that Dexter kills bad people. However, Dexter's 'new job' could merely provide him with the opportunity to eventually escape and start a new life on the run.

Paramount + has big plans for the Dexter-verse since it merged with Showtime, and they clearly see the importance of Michael C. Hall's involvement, with the actor providing 'the inner voice of Dexter' narration in Dexter: Original Sin as well as reprising his most famous role in the sequel series. Dexter: Resurrection will probably not just be one season, like Dexter: New Blood was, and they need to set up a new dynamic, so the show can potentially run for many seasons. The Dexter/law enforcement team up could be the dynamic that achieves this outcome, with the added possibility of Dexter: Original Sin linking up with the sequel series.

Dexter: Resurrection Probably Exists Because This Character isn't Popular Enough

Harrison was a divisive character in Dexter: New Blood and that could be why the Harrison spin off was scrapped and Dexter: Resurrection came about.
