Summary

  • Dexter: Resurrection is to air in 2025 on Paramount + & Showtime, featuring a mix of old and new elements.
  • Possible return of Harry or Debra Morgan's ghost to guide the troubled Dexter in the sequel.
  • Ghostly visions could include past characters Dexter killed or indirectly caused their deaths.

Dexter: Resurrection will begin shooting in January 2025, and it'll air on Paramount + and Showtime in the summer of next year. Clyde Phillips will be the showrunner for the sequel series, and his team of writers are currently hard at work trying to figure out how Dexter Morgan will return after his supposed death in Dexter: New Blood. Michael C. Hall will return as the iconic serial killer with a code, and the new show is bound to feature a mixture of old and new elements to keep the fans on their toes..

A mainstay of both the original series and its spin-off limited series, New Blood, was the existence of a ghost to guide Dexter through his troubling times, and it could re-appear with Dexter alive in Dexter: Resurrection, but questions remain over who it could be. James Remar played an apparition of Dexter's dead adoptive father, Harry Morgan, in the original series which ran between 2006-2013. However, when Dexter: New Blood aired in 2021-2022, it was Jennifer Carpenter's Debra Morgan who took over as a more forthright figment of Dexter's imagination.

Dexter: Resurrection Needs To Return To This Iconic Location

Dexter: New Blood was set in the icy wilderness of Upstate New York, so Dexter: Resurrection should return to Miami, where the first series was set.

Who Could Play Dexter's Ghost in Dexter: Resurrection?

Harry Morgan

James Remar played Dexter's ghostly father, Harry Morgan, very well in Dexter, but in the later years of the original run, his appearance became less effective, and it was a distraction from the events taking place. Remar also featured as Harry in some key flashback sequences in the early years of the show, and these were always insightful. It was a good decision to not include him in Dexter: New Blood, as Dexter had moved on from his father's influence, and was haunted by a number of different events in his life, including the death of his beloved sister, Debra Morgan, who then became his ghost.

By the time Dexter: Resurrection comes out in summer 2025, it'll be 12 long years since Harry has been seen on screen, and it might be time to revisit his ghost. Harry's possible return in the sequel series could link up with the prequel series, Dexter: Original Sin, as that show will feature Harry Morgan as one of the main characters. Christian Slater will play the younger version of Harry Morgan in Dexter's upcoming prequel, so he could also play Harry's ghost in Dexter: Resurrection, as it would provide vital connective tissue between the two shows.

Debra Morgan

Debra Morgan's death in the finale of the original Dexter series was devastating for fans, after the evolution of her character over many seasons. But in the world of Dexter, being dead doesn't always rule out a character's return, and Debra did return in Dexter: New Blood, replacing her father, Harry, as Dexter's new ghost.

Harry's ghost was always a supportive force in Dexter's subconscious, but Debra was the complete opposite. She was combative and forced Dexter to face up to who he really was. Debra did do this in the original series when she found out Dexter was a serial killer, but Ghost Debra was even more forceful. There is a good chance Dexter: Resurrection could continue the dynamic between Dexter and Ghost Deb, especially as Michael C. Hall didn't rule out Jennifer Carpenter's return to the role in a recent interview with Variety:

Never say never. This world has a sort of magical element, so I wouldn’t definitively say no to any proposition. There’s a whole cast of characters that populate his wider world and have the potential to re-emerge.

Dexter Could Experience Ghosts Of People He Has Killed

An alternative option for Dexter: Resurrection could be to have different characters who Dexter killed in Dexter and Dexter: New Blood appear as his ghostly apparitions. This would facilitate the return of the best villains in the Dexter series, like The Trinity Killer (played by John Lithgow) and The Ice Truck Killer (Christian Camargo), who had already returned as Dexter's ghost in later seasons of the original show. So far, Dexter's ghosts have always been family members, so the Ice Truck Killer would fit in with this tradition, as he was Dexter's brother.

Dexter: Resurrection Could Opt To Have Ghosts Of Characters Whose Deaths Dexter Was Indirectly Responsible For

Dexter's ghosts in Dexter: Resurrection could also be good people who were killed because of him, like Maria LaGuerta, James Doakes and Frank Lundy. Interestingly, all three characters re-appeared in the final moments of Dexter: New Blood in haunting flashbacks, alongside other innocent characters who perished because of Dexter, including a kill that Dexter: Resurrection will find it hard to justify.

Innocent Characters Who Died Because Of Dexter:

  • Maria LaGuerta: Shot and killed by Debra when forced to choose between her and Dexter.
  • James Doakes: Died in an explosion set off by Dexter's girlfriend, Lila, after Dexter captured him and kept him prisoner while he decided what to do with him.
  • Frank Lundy: Shot and killed by Trinity's daughter, but he originally came to Miami to hunt down the Bay Harbor Butcher (who was, of course, Dexter)
  • Debra Morgan: Shot and killed by Oliver Saxon/Daniel Vogel (a.k.a. The Brain Surgeon) after Dexter decided against killing him
  • Harry Morgan: Killed himself after not being able to deal with what Dexter had become.
  • Rita Bennett: Killed by The Trinity Killer after Dexter failed to kill him straightaway.
  • Coach Logan: Killed By Dexter in order to escape his jail cell.

It's a possibility that these flashbacks could represent the characters who will all haunt Dexter in Dexter: Resurrection. After Dexter is resurrected in the sequel series, there is a chance he might not experience any ghostly visions, and the story will go in a different direction that differentiates itself from Dexter and Dexter: New Blood. The ghostly visions have often got in the way of Dexter's story, so it could be quite freeing to get rid of them altogether.

Dexter: Original Sin Should Explore Dexter's Urge To Kill Good People

Dexter: Original Sin will explore a young Dexter, as he tries to follow the code, but it could focus on the serial killer's urge to ignore the code.
