A New Serial Killer Arrives In Dexter: Resurrection
The first episode of Dexter: Resurrection was kept at a fast pace, but this one took things to another level as a mysterious figure was shown getting into the back of a ride-share vehicle that isn't for him. He traps the driver's head with a metal wire, claiming his family lost everything because of people like the taxi driver, setting an ominous tone for the entire episode as he's then shown decapitated. It instantly ramps up the gore level for this serious, proving that Paramount won't be pulling things back in that regard.
The ride-share world plays a big part in this episode as Dexter uses one to meet Blessing, who quickly becomes a fast friend. While their bond is pushed slightly too fast compared to how friendships would usually work, the on-screen chemistry between them makes this feel somewhat natural. He reveals to Dexter that a serial killer is taking out ride-share drivers, known as the Dark Passenger. It's an instant throwback to the name that Dexter himself used to use about his urges to kill people, and that sets off a trigger within him, proving that once a serial killer, always a serial killer, while also giving fans a nod to the original series.
Blessing just so happened to have a friend who escaped the Dark Passenger, and when Dexter attends a party at his house, he's able to gain more information about him. Meanwhile, Dexter himself pushes to become a ride-share driver, which is quite the career change from what he's best known for. This episode of Dexter: Resurrection features a plot that will be familiar to many fans, with Dexter doing lots of research into the Dark Passenger to try and identify him. Eventually, they have a face-to-face interaction by happenstance after Dexter intercepts the killer trying to get into a car.
Fatherhood Is The Theme Throughout The Episode

One of the key elements of this episode is the importance of fatherhood, which was established in the first episode. Harry Morgan is quick to point out the violent nature of Harrison's crime, and how he was the one who helped Dexter at that age to calm down and be more clinical and careful. However, Dexter remains cautious with his desire not to speak to his son and only help within the shadows. Dexter's desire to help his son continues as he sneaks into the hotel to try and cover up Harrison's tracks and check any potential mistakes he made with the clean-up process of his murder. Yet, at the same time, the NYPD is also in the area, breaking down the scene and proving that Harrison is dealing with an impressive pair of detectives. All the while, Harrison is still seeing Ryan's bloodied body within his own head, providing a unique jump scare element to the episode.
Dexter eventually gets into the kitchen where Harrison chopped up Ryan's body, where he's able to clean up the small traces of blood that he left in the first place, removing some significant evidence, highlighting his fatherly help without Harrison even knowing. However, Harrison ends up having a nightmare about 'killing' his father as he seemingly spots him. While he then sells the truck he stole from his father, which, unbeknownst to him, allows Batista to know that Dexter is in New York due to tracking information.
Even in small scenes, such as Dexter seeing a child eating too many pancakes at breakfast or the fatherly connection between Blessing and his daughter, the importance of this bond is a running theme. Dexter even takes an apartment from Blessing just to be around to continue watching Harrison, pushing the narrative even more.
'Camera Shy' Allows Dexter: Resurrection To Get Into The Grittier Details
This Series Isn't Going To Be Racing Through Any Storylines
One of the brilliant aspects of this episode is that it takes Dexter back to his original roots of hunting down a serial killer, proving that the classic magic of what made the show popular in the first place won't be lost among everything else that's going on. However, it also freshened up his character and proved he's slightly changing, as a big takeaway from the episode was how Dexter stopped the Dark Passenger from killing somebody else, which was a drastic change from how he's typically been portrayed over the years.
The episode develops all of the major storylines, from the murder Harrison committed to Angel Batista, who is still looking for Dexter, while introducing new characters and ideas that will have an impact as the show goes on. There's lots of detail, and it proves that the writers are going to take their time and do a deep dive into every aspect to ensure this is a detailed series, just as the original was.
The episode also hints that Uma Thurman's character, Charley, reappears as she makes it clear to Keith that he's not gaining any more money from her boss. He threatens to go to the police with the information, but he gets bludgeoned to the head for his troubles. Given that the trailer gave away the idea of multiple serial killers, this was certainly an interesting moment that seems to give a wink at what's to come for Dexter: Resurrection, in what was another impressive episode of the show.
