Dexter: Resurrection Fans Were Surprised By Erik Stonestreet's Casting

three members of the cast from Modern Family

Some Dexter fans were shocked when Stonestreet was cast in Dexter: Resurrection because he is best known for playing Cameron Tucker in Modern Family. The Emmy-winning actor was the cheery, fun-loving uncle in the hit comedy series, literally playing a clown at times as Fizbo. That role isn't one that necessarily screams playing a murderer, but that hasn't stopped him from being cast in that role. His character in Dexter: Resurrection is believed to be a serial killer with a midwestern background, and that's likely to put him in Dexter's crosshairs throughout the show.

Stonestreet revealed on Instagram he is "Very excited to work with this outstanding group of people" when he shared the news, and he is the latest major name to be attached to the project. How I Met Your Mothe r star Neil Patrick Harris is in the show, while Kill Bill's Uma Thurman is also going to be involved, as is Game of Thrones actor Peter Dinklage. The cast is an impressive one that is going to draw in a lot of viewers, and Stonestreet's character is expected to have a big role to play in the series.

The Loft Showcases Erik Stonestreet Can Deliver A Darker Performance

The Loft
The Loft

Most people heading into Dexter: Resurrection will know Stonestreet best from Modern Family, but he has far more strings to his bow than that. He's a gifted actor who is capable of delivering a wide range of performances, and when it comes to playing a darker role, The Loft is one of the best examples. The 2014 thriller is an intense movie that features a brilliant ensemble cast featuring the likes of James Marsden and Karl Urban. It might be a smaller movie on a budget of just $13 million, but it's one that fans of Dexter should witness to get an idea of the type of performance Stonestreet will provide.

He plays Matt Landry, who is an alcoholic and one of five men who share ownership of a loft, which they use to meet their mistresses. Each character has their own issues going on in their real lives and opts to keep the secret until a body is found murdered. The rest of the film sees the five men trying to find out who actually committed the crime as their secrets begin to unravel. Stonestreet proves his ability to play a far darker character in this, with the role being the complete opposite of his performance in Modern Family. From this movie alone, it is clear to see how Stonestreet can make a character in Dexter: Resurrection work.

Dexter Has Often Had Unconventional Villains

John-Lithgow-as-the-Trinity-Killer-in-Dexter

Stonestreet might not be the first person that people would think of when it comes to casting a serial killer. Still, the Dexter franchise has never had a problem thinking outside of the box and bringing in unusual characters like Dexter's enemies. John Lithgow's character, Arthur Mitchell, is an elderly family man who is dedicated to church, which isn't something most people would presume to be a serial killer. However, Lithgow helped to create arguably the most memorable villain in the history of the main series as the infamous 'Trinity Killer,' proving that it's important for viewers not to judge a character based on their initial appearances. Travis was another example, as the 'Doomsday Killer', as he's someone else who doesn't seem to be scary at the outset, yet Colin Hanks created another great character.

Dexter himself isn't someone who audiences would pick to be a serial killer, but the anti-hero is arguably the sickest character in the entire franchise. That is all down to Michael C. Hall's performance and proves that Stonestreet's casting isn't a risk in the slightest; in fact, it's perfectly in tune with how the franchise has operated. The focus of Dexter's casting department has always been on bringing in high-quality actors to deliver compelling performances, which is why the series became so popular in the first place. Considering the talent brought together for Dexter: Resurrection, it appears that it is going to continue and should set the show up in a positive manner.
