Dexter: Resurrection will see Michael C. Hall step back into his most iconic role on Paramount + with Showtime this summer. The two-episode premiere will land on July 11, with subsequent episodes airing once a week. All signs point towards a return to the vibe of the original series, with legacy characters like Angel Batista and Harry Morgan coming back. However, there's one huge element that desperately needs to come back in order for the spin-off series to qualify as quintessential Dexter.
In the original series, Dexter would take a sample of his victims' blood before killing them. Michael C. Hall's serial killer with a code would then create a blood slide as a trophy, and hide it in a box in an air vent at his apartment. However, the blood slides eventually led to Dexter's undoing, as he left one at the scene of a crime, which led Maria LaGuerta to figure out he was the Bay Harbor Butcher. Dexter stopped collecting his trophies after that, but with plenty more bad people to kill in Resurrection, it might be time to revert to his old ways.

For seven seasons, Dexter Morgan killed a lot of people, and subsequently kept a lot of blood slides. Most serial killers keep trophies of their crimes, and as it goes, Dexter's collection of blood isn't as macabre as some of his peers. In his job as Miami Metro's forensic analyst, Dexter was used to taking samples of blood, so it was quite fitting that his extra-curricular activities also involved taking blood from soon-to-be dead bodies. However, Dexter's trophy hunting nearly led to his downfall, twice. In season 2, James Doakes discovered his secret stash, and figured out his co-worker was the Bay Harbor Butcher. Dexter was able to frame Doakes as the Bay Harbor Butcher, and it didn't stop him from starting up his collection in future seasons.
Dexter's collection of blood slides did eventually stop, and it came about because he left one at the scene of one of the best villains, Travis Marshall's murder, when his sister, Debra, found out his dark secret. The siblings set fire to the church, but Maria LaGuerta found a blood slide, and linked it to the Bay Harbor Butcher case. Dexter eventually gave up his dark collection, for two reasons: increased pressure from Debra, who was disgusted by his trophy collecting, and LaGuerta's investigation. After killing Ray Speltzer, Dexter put his beloved blood slide box in an incinerator alongside his victim, and said goodbye to his trophy cabinet. It was the end of an era for Dexter, but Resurrection could be the beginning of a new one.
The Return Of The Blood Slides In Resurrection Would Be A Good Way To Get Dexter Back To His Roots
It doesn't feel like a true Dexter kill if there are no blood slides, but that's exactly what happened in the much derived final season of the original series. Dexter was no longer the neat monster he used to be, and he also didn't kill as many people as he did in previous seasons. However, there was a slight return to Dexter's old ways in the limited series, New Blood, when he killed Matt Caldwell, and produced a makeshift blood slide using two pieces of glass. As much as New Blood was a return to form after a lackluster 'final' season, it was still missing the classic Dexter kill scenes. A big part of those kill scenes was Dexter modus operandi, which featured the blood slides, and they need to return in the upcoming sequel spin-off series, Resurrection.
If Resurrection is going to run for multiple seasons, which is very much the plan, the signature kills could be a big part of its potential success. Many fans want to see Dexter back in his green Henley Kill T-shirt, needle in hand, with a deplorable villain on his table, as he extracts a small amount of blood from them, before they meet their grisly end. Dexter: Resurrection's executive producer, Scott Reynolds, did actually tease a potential return for the iconic blood slides in a social media post in April.
This image shows a surgical scalpel and blood dropper present alongside a series of slides. This strongly suggests the blood slides will be making a return in Resurrection, and this is very exciting for legacy fans of the show. Reynolds' image featured the caption: 'It’s gonna be that kind of night on set'. Bring on July 11.
