Dexter: Resurrection will commence filming in January 2025, with Michael C. Hall reprising the iconic role of Dexter Morgan. Paramount+ with Showtime will air Dexter's return in the summer of 2025. The sequel series will be set immediately after the events of Dexter: New Blood, with the titular serial killer seemingly fighting for his life after being shot by his teenage son, Harrison. Fans are speculating about exactly how this could be possible with Dexter's crimes finally out in the open. However, there is one particular way that would be so ironic that it would actually make total sense and pay homage to the original Dexter series.

Fans were shocked when Michael C. Hall made an appearance at San Diego Comic Con 2024 and revealed that Dexter was returning in a sequel series, especially as showrunner. Clyde Phillips had previously stated in an interview with Deadline that the killer protagonist died at the end of New Blood:

I have three words for you: Dexter is dead. I wouldn't do that to the audience. It would be dishonest. Here, there is no question that this is the finale of Dexter.

The fan theories about how Dexter could return in Dexter: Resurrection began, and Michael C. Hall fueled them even more when he revealed in an interview with Variety, that Dexter Morgan's new arc might run for multiple seasons. If this is to be the case, Dexter can't be in prison for his crimes, and it's also debatable whether he can be on the run indefinitely as well. However, Dexter could be put on trial for his crimes in Dexter: Resurrection, but ultimately escape captivity due to a legal technicality, and be free to roam the streets in search of more bad people to kill.

It would be ironically reminiscent of what happened in the original Dexter series, with Dexter often killing criminals who had escaped justice for their crimes. There might even be another avenging serial killer who wants to target Dexter for his crimes upon his release. Having said that, they probably wouldn't last too long if they tried to kill Dexter, as he's pretty good at cheating death, as proven in both Dexter finales.

Dexter Escaping Justice For His Crimes Could Open Up A Lot More Possibilities For Future Storylines

As much as it would be fun to see Dexter on the run, it would hamper the story after a while, if he was always trying to evade capture. Dexter as a fugitive can't work for multiple seasons, with the net closing in on him, so a plot point involving a trial and subsequent acquittal could be a very interesting avenue to explore. The authorities will likely choose to transport Dexter back to the iconic location of Miami to face up to his crimes, as most of his bad deeds took place there. Florida is also a death penalty state and that could raise the stakes of the trial significantly. However, something that is known about Miami (at least in the Dexter-verse), is that criminals get away with murder a lot, and this is what originally led to so many bad people ending up on Dexter's kill table.

The irony would not be lost on Dexter if he was to escape death row due to a technicality. To inject some comedy into the situation, it could be the return of Vince Masuka that leads to Dexter's release, with a possible dodgy lab report from his old colleague possibly leading to his exoneration.
