Summary

  • Fans were surprised by Michael C. Hall's return to the Dexter universe in the new sequel series.
  • Dexter: Resurrection aims to continue Dexter's story after a mixed reception to past endings.
  • The new series has the potential to explore unresolved plot points and bring back key characters.

Fans were shocked when Michael C. Hall announced he would be returning to the Dexter universe, in the sequel series, Dexter: Resurrection, and also as 'the inner voice of Dexter' in the prequel series, Dexter: Original Sin. The limited series, Dexter: New Blood came to an end in early 2022, and many fans thought that was the completion of the serial killer's story. Dexter had been shot in the chest by his teenage son, Harrison, and was bleeding out on the snowy floor of a wooded area in the small town of Iron Lake in upstate New York.

Dexter: New Blood was Showtime's biggest ever show, and when Paramount merged with the cable network, they were keen to expand the Dexter-verse, with initial plans for a Dexter prequel, New Blood season 2 and a Trinity spin-off. Dexter: Resurrection was a no-brainer from a business point of view due to the success of the limited series. However, it has many fans questioning if there's actually much story left to tell and anything more left to say about Dexter.

It Came As A Surprise When The Dexter Sequel Series Was Announced As It Felt Like The Story Had Been Completed

Michael C. Hall made a surprise appearance on the panel for the prequel series, Dexter: Original Sin at San Diego Comic Con 2024, alongside showrunner Clyde Phillips and the Dexter prequel series' new cast. Not only did he announce that he would provide the narration for Dexter: Original Sin, but he would also be reprising his most famous role in a sequel series titled Dexter: Resurrection, which surprised many fans as it had been confirmed that Dexter died at the end of Dexter: New Blood. This confirmation came from Clyde Phillips himself during an interview with Deadline after the airing of the finale of New Blood in 2022:

I have three words for you: Dexter is dead. I wouldn’t do that to the audience. It would be dishonest. Here, there is no question that this is the finale of Dexter. Dexter is dead.

Both Dexter finales have been negatively received by fans, so Dexter: Resurrection does give the creative team a third opportunity to end Dexter's story on a high note. However, it did appear that Dexter's story had been completed for better or worse with the supposedly definitive ending of Dexter: New Blood. Dexter: Resurrection probably exists because Harrison wasn't popular enough, with his story being the original planned spin-off before it was scrapped.

Michael C. Hall was announced to be an executive producer on Dexter: Original Sin, but it came as a shock when the opening title sequence was shown at San Diego Comic Con, and it was revealed that Hall would narrate 'the inner voice of Dexter'. The Dexter-verse needs Michael C. Hall involved if it is going to continue being a huge success, as he is the face of the franchise, and that is probably why he's coming back in the sequel series. However, fans are not only questioning how he will be brought back, but what is there actually left to say about Dexter?

What Story Is Left To Tell in Dexter: Resurrection?

Dexter: New Blood did complete Dexter's story in many ways, but it did feel very rushed with certain plot points being left unresolved. Michael C. Hall has played the serial killer with a code in 106 episodes in total. He portrayed the neat monster in all 96 episodes of the original Dexter series between 2006-2013, and Dexter: New Blood in 2021-2022, which featured 10 more episodes, and that was considered to be the end of Dexter's story.

Turns out, Dexter has more lives than a cat, and he will actually be alive in Dexter: Resurrection and his story will continue indefinitely. The sequel series will not have a limited run, so fans might be seeing their favorite serial killer on television for many years to come. Dexter: Resurrection must not just be a cash grab for Paramount and Showtime, as it'll fail if the story isn't strong enough. But after nine series and over 100 episodes, what could possibly happen to continue Dexter's story in a meaningful way?

Dexter: Resurrection could bring back key characters whose stories still have plenty more juice in them, and that could help to keep Dexter's story moving forward for multiple seasons. Angel Batista was on his way to confront Dexter about the Bay Harbor Butcher murders, and this is a particular arc that many fans want to see completed on screen. There is also the possibility that Dexter's dark passenger could be used to help law enforcement track down some of America's worst serial killers, and that could be an intriguing way to keep Dexter's story going, with a possible redemption arc.

Dexter: Resurrection could also return to the iconic location of Miami, as Dexter has a lot of unfinished business to contend with in his former home city. Also, when Dexter's story eventually wraps up, they could use Clyde Phillips' alternate ending, with Dexter finally paying for his crimes via execution in the state of Florida. There is a lot more potential story to tell about the character of Dexter Morgan in Dexter: Resurrection, as he possesses such a complex backstory which could link the sequel series with the Dexter prequel.
