Diablo 4 made rounds in the news earlier this year after Rod Ferguson, the General Manager in charge of the game, announced that there will not be a major expansion updating the meta in 2025. Hardcore fans of the game have to wait till 2026 for anything of the sort. Following this announcement, Blizzard faced backlash from the Diablo 4 community, as the developer had previously promised annual expansions for the game. With this unexpected turn of events, it was only a matter of time before Blizzard shared Diablo 4's updated content roadmap for 2025.
Naturally, owing to the disappointment stemming from the lack of expansion this year, the Diablo 4 player base has considerable doubts about Blizzard's content plans -- and whether they are buff enough to give them a reason to boot up the game. However, there could still be something for every player class to look forward to.
Diablo 4 May Want to Take Notes from One Popular Game's Battle Pass
Diablo 4 may be adopting a more flexible Battle Pass with player-driven reward paths, so getting inspiration from one game could be worthwhile.
Diablo 4’s 2025 Roadmap Builds On The Vessel of Hatred Expansion
The Age of Hatred began with the launch of Diablo 4, and Mephisto’s resurgence in the Vessel of Hatred expansion further progressed the storyline. Diablo 4’s 2025 roadmap, termed “The Age of Hatred Continues”, follows the spread of Mephisto’s influence through the seasons and questlines, building up to the next major expansion (currently slated for 2026).
The roadmap unveils the three remaining seasons for 2025 and their planned content, such as bosses, dungeons, and seasonal powers. Earlier this year, Season 7 introduced Witch powers, Headhunt activity, a new armory, and quality-of-life updates. After a two-week extension period of Season 7, April 29 will kick off Diablo 4 Season 8's package of Belial's Return.
As the name suggests, Belial's Return will see the fan-favorite Lord of Lies return to the franchise, which also heralds a revamp of the endgame Lair Boss system. New seasonal mechanics, powers, items, and other bosses like Urivar and Harbinger are scheduled to feature, as well as an unnamed IP collab and a 2nd-anniversary celebration of Diablo 4 on June 1.
Seasons 9 and 10 Are The Final Build Up To The New Diablo 4 Expansion
Diablo 4 Season 9, Sins of the Horadrim, is set to kick off in July and run through September. It is set to introduce content like new seasonal powers, quests, and a new Nightmare dungeon escalation that allows players to scale up intensity in their quest to find and take down the barons of Hell. It will also bring a frequently requested quality-of-life feature to console players by introducing support for mouse and keyboard.
Season 10, Infernal Chaos, will begin in September and run through December, bringing new Chaos powers, quests, and updates to the Infernal Hordes endgame activity -- which effectively puts new choices on the map for players. Every season in 2025 will follow the footsteps of Season 7, as players are allowed to earn a pet, although Blizzard has not revealed what pets are up for grabs in Season 9 and 10.
The particularly exciting content proposals are the Diablo 4's IP collabs launching in Seasons 8 and 10, since last year's World of Warcraft mashup contributed immensely to player count and overall ratings. Despite the identities of the IPs currently being shrouded in mystery, Blizzard teased that the collabs will feature universes that complement the dark themes of the Diablo franchise. Blizzard’s announcement blog post also mentioned core system updates to the Battle Pass and Seasonal journey to make them more rewarding, although the developer kept its cards close to its chest in this regard.
The final part of the roadmap gives an insight into 2026, when a major expansion is expected to be launched. In line with Blizzard’s secretive approach to releases, there is very little information on what it might entail. While there's admittedly little by way of lore development on the cards, there's more than enough content in the 2025 roadmap to keep Diablo 4 fans entertained until more teasers drop.
