Summary

  • Diablo 4 may move away from its current Battle Pass system soon.
  • Rod Fergusson highlights Call of Duty's map Battle Pass as one to look at.

Diablo 4 boss Rod Fergusson has revealed that Blizzard may look to move away from the game's current Battle Pass system in the future. This will be great news for gamers who have become tired of Diablo 4's current Battle Pass system.

At the moment, each Season offers a new Diablo 4 Battle Pass, usually containing 90 tiers of items for players to unlock over the course of the Season. These are separated into free and premium rewards, ensuring that players don't have to spend money each Season to take part. For a modern live-service Battle Pass, this is very standard fare. However, this has been the way of doing things for live-service titles for a few years now, and some are starting to branch out and experiment with new twists on the tired Battle Pass formula. It seems Diablo 4 may be next in line.

Speaking to Game File at the recent 2025 DICE Summit, Diablo 4 boss Rod Fergusson described the modern Battle Pass as "probably an antiquated system now," claiming, "There are different ways to gamify and to give the players more agency. So I think what I would say is, watch this space for us. I think we're going to be introducing some interesting things." He also spoke highly of a recent version of Call of Duty's map Battle Passes, where players could prioritize what they wanted to unlock next. This type of Battle Pass was left behind by Call of Duty: Black Ops 6, but it seems Fergusson still feels it could be a positive way forward for Diablo 4.

Diablo 4 Might Replace "Antiquated" Battle Passes

Fergusson's comments aren't necessarily confirmation of any impending change to the Battle Passes in the upcoming Season 8 of Diablo 4. However, it is an indication that plans for the future are now in motion, even if Blizzard hasn't yet decided on the exact way it wants to present the Battle Pass to players. During the same interview, Fergusson also mentioned the possibility of more crossovers going forward, claiming the studio "talks about it all the time," with cosmetics expected to get "more flamboyant and more out there" in the future.

With Season 7 of Diablo 4's recent extension, gamers will have to wait a little while longer before they get their hands on the game's next major content drop. However, Blizzard is starting to reveal a little more about what players can expect from the upcoming Season 8, with recent confirmation that Diablo 3 boss Belial will be making a return. It seems that Season 8 will focus on a difficulty spike for the endgame, which is great news for the hardcore players.
