Diablo 4 just released a duo of short stories that give some lore to the cash shop. These two tales expand on the background of Diablo 4's in-game store’s vendor, as well as several of its available items.
The launch of Diablo 4 has been largely successful outside a handful of glitches. Blizzard has spared no expense in marketing, with Diablo 4 collaborating with the likes of KFC, Halsey, and Megan Fox to build hype for the return to Sanctuary.
Now, Diablo 4 has released two short stories written by award-winning authors, each expanding on the lore of the cash shop. The first story, “Witness” by Alma Katsu, explores the backstory of Tejal, the in-game store vendor and member of the time-traveling Hedaji scribes who collect artifacts from history to sell. The story explains how she survived the destruction of her home and became Hedaji–and how the echoes of that tragedy haunt her in the present.
The second story, “The Toll of Darkness and Light” by Jonathan Maberry, is a tale spun by Tejal herself about Klath-Ulna. Known as the Golden One, Klath-Ulna was a member of a barbarian tribe wiped out by Zakarum crusaders, who then went on to claim revenge by constructing armor out of their sacred golden bells. The short story tells of his final conquest in the town of Saint’s Calling, and how his battle with a young paladin changed him forever. Klath-Ulna’s armor for Barbarians in Diablo 4, as well as a back accessory and mount ensemble, are cosmetic items players can purchase in the shop.
Few players expected Diablo 4 to release companion short stories, and fewer still thought they would be about the cash shop. Each item in the Diablo 4 store has a small entry of lore associated with it, but these stories provide even more interesting snapshots of Sanctuary that many lore fans will enjoy. Diablo 4 has confirmed more of these short stories are coming soon, so players can look forward to seeing more tales from Tejal in the future.
However, some players think it is a little strange to be writing short stories for the Diablo 4 cash shop, of all things. Though reception to the new ARPG has been mostly positive, Diablo 4’s in-game cosmetic shop has been criticized due to its high prices, leading many to consider these short stories to be little more than advertisements. Luckily, players can enjoy these tales regardless of whether they decide to purchase cosmetics from the Diablo 4 shop.
Diablo 4 is available now on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
