Summary

  • Diablo 4 breaks its concurrent player record on Steam yet again, hitting 38,981 concurrent players after the launch of season 4.
  • The game has a mostly positive rating on Steam now, despite a rocky launch, and continues to gain momentum.
  • The player count being broken weeks after the Season 4 launch shows that players are sticking with the game long-term and enjoying the new content. Additionally, a recent sale has likely contributed to the record being broken.

Eight months after its launch on Steam in October 2023, Diablo 4 hit a new record for concurrent players. Diablo 4 originally launched on June 5, 2023, and on PC, the game was initially only available to play via Blizzard's own launcher, Battle.net. Later that year, Blizzard released Diablo 4 on Steam.

Blizzard began re-releasing its games on Steam in August 2023. On August 10, 2023, Blizzard launched Overwatch 2 on Steam, which signaled a rejuvenation for the game (albeit at the cost of a review bombing), expanding the game's reach beyond the confines of Battle.net. Following the success of this release, Blizzard launched Diablo 4 on the platform, bringing in an influx of new players to the game. Now eight months later, Diablo 4 has reached new heights on the platform.

Diablo 4 Smashes All-Time Player Count

Diablo 4 recently broke its concurrent player record, reaching an all-time high of 38,981 players according to SteamDB. This comes off the heels of Diablo 4's season 4 launch, meaning season 4's launch not only brought back old players, but encouraged new ones to try out the title. Additionally, these players have stuck with the game weeks after the new season's launch. For comparison, Season 2 peaked at 28, 836 players and Season 3 peaked at just 15,343 players.

Diablo 4 hitting 38,981 players is the second time the game has broken its player record count in a row. When Season 4 launched, Diablo 4 broke its concurrent player count. Now, it's happened again just a few weeks later. The 38,981 player count only represents a small percentage of the actual current Diablo 4 players, as there are also console players to take into consideration. Those aren't even all the players on PC, either, only those playing the game via Steam. Since the game launched on Battle.net four months before it launched on Steam, a large portion of Diablo 4's install base on PC remains on that platform. The game is also available to play on PC via Xbox Game Pass.

Blizzard put Diablo 4 on sale on June 2, which is likely contributing to the all-time player count being broken as well. Despite Diablo 4 having a rocky launch, the game now has a mostly positive rating on Steam, and with season 4 well underway, the game is showing no signs of slowing down.
