Blizzard snuck in a surprise event for Diablo 4 players to enjoy alongside the game's most recent patch. Diablo 4 update 2.3.2 not only introduces numerous bug fixes— including a patch to one Uber Lilith bug that prevents the boss's second phase from happening—but it also kicked off the March of the Goblins event for Season 9. While this event may help revitalize some players' interest in the Sins of the Horadrim season now that it is well past its initial hype, not every player will benefit from hunting for Treasure Goblins.
Diablo 4 Season 9's events have been fairly generous so far, with the Gift of the Tree event running from July 15-22 following the release of update 2.3.1, and now the March of the Goblins event is ongoing with the launch of patch 2.3.2. Both of these events are helpful for earning more gear, materials, and gold, which become increasingly necessary as players reach Diablo 4 Season 9's endgame content. However, the March of the Goblins event may not be as exciting for one group of Diablo 4 players compared to the Gift of the Tree, largely due to the poor timing of this new event.
The March of the Goblins event runs until August 5, so Diablo 4 players have a week to reap its rewards.
Diablo 4's Age of Hatred May Persist Long Past Its Expiration Date
Diablo 4's Vessel of Hatred expansion has ushered in the Age of Hatred, but this era can't simply end when the next expansion releases.
Diablo 4 Season 9's March of the Goblins Event May Not Be For Everyone
March of the Goblins is a Great Way to Stock Up on Diablo 4 Loot
The March of the Goblins event makes Diablo 4's rare Treasure Goblin enemies spawn more frequently. Chasing down and slaying these enemies causes them to drop a trove of loot for players to collect, including everything from gold and materials to Legendaries, Uniques, and in the extremely rare case, Mythics. Diablo 4 Season 7 introduced six new goblin variants alongside the standard one, each dropping a specific type of item when defeated:
- Odious Ector (Green) – Drops crafting materials
- Gilded Baron (Yellow) – Drops large sums of Gold
- Glittering Prym (Diamond) – Drops Gem Fragments, Runes, and Undercity Tributes
- Curious Murl (Purple) – Drops Murl's Bag of Obols
- Gelatinous Syrus (Blue) – Splits into multiple goblins when killed. Drops Legendary gear, Gold, Boss Summoning materials, and Elixirs
- Fancy Old Fedric (Mythic Purple) – Drops a Mythic and a Resplendent Spark
Depending on where a player is in their season journey, some of these goblins will be more useful than others. Players in Diablo 4's mid-game can benefit from slaying Glittering Prym, since Runes and Undercity Tributes are key to finishing most builds, while Curious Murl's Bag of Obols can be helpful for trying to farm a specific Unique drop from the Purveyor of Curiosities. Fancy Old Fedric is by far the most coveted goblin since it drops a Mythic and a Resplendent Spark, but players are unlikely to ever see the goblin as this Diablo 4 enemy has nearly a 1-in-a-million chance of spawning.
Diablo 4 Players in the Endgame Won't Benefit Much from Goblin Loot Drops
As useful as some Diablo 4 players will find this event, it won't move the needle much for players who have moved past the need for Legendary gear. Unfortunately, Treasure Goblin loot often prioritizes quantity over quality, which is a recurring complaint with Diablo 4's late-game itemization. Players looking for Uniques and gear with multiple Greater Affixes to optimize their endgame build won't get much mileage out of slaying a goblin, since these drops are few and far between.
It may still be worth these players' time to watch for Fancy Old Fedric, despite the goblin's incredible rarity, since Mythics and Resplendent Sparks are hot commodities for the endgame. However, with how minimal a chance players have of seeing this goblin, the March of the Goblins event may be nothing more than a blip on a good portion of players' radars this far into Diablo 4 Season 9.
Fancy Old Fedric and Curious Murl are both shades of purple, so they can be hard to tell apart. However, Diablo 4 players are far more likely to encounter Curious Murl than Fedric during the March of the Goblins event.
