Diablo 4 players are once again requesting a major quality-of-life improvement be made to the ARPG, this time revisiting the lack of a feature allowing presets for custom builds. A player's build, combining chosen skills, their class' skill tree, paragon points, and equipment, defines their Diablo 4 gameplay. Yet Diablo 4 players are all but restricted to a single build, as any substantial changes are prohibitively tedious and time-consuming. Blizzard has confirmed no plans to add such a feature, at this point.
It can't be understated how much time and effort goes into developing a build in Diablo 4. Between levels 1 and 50, which is intended to be experienced while playing through Diablo 4's campaign, progression can be straightforward. Players earn Skill Points at each level and better equipment through encounters. Skills can be refunded with ease, and equipment is rarely kept after swapping for something better. Build experimentation is encouraged. After level 50, however, everything becomes increasingly complicated, and changing builds is rare.
As more and more Diablo 4 players finish the campaign and begin their climb to level 100, the requests for custom-build presets that can be saved and swapped with relative ease grow louder. One Reddit thread begs Blizzard to "Please let us save builds," mentioning that altering builds is time-consuming and feels punishing. They ask to be able to save Paragon boards, Skill builds, and a Stash-like UI for saved builds.
The basic idea is that players reaching Diablo 4's endgame have the resources available to make other interesting builds viable. However, swapping to a new build takes a lot of time and energy, and isn't guaranteed to work out well. If a player wanted to swap back to their original build, it would take even more time and energy. It's too much to ask, so Diablo 4 players are unlikely to swap builds once reaching endgame whatsoever.
There are no confirmed plans to add custom-build presets at this time. Blizzard may be considering the possibility internally, of course. If Diablo 4 players are thinking about it, then Blizzard has very likely considered it, too. If Blizzard did decide to add the feature, it almost certainly would be reserved for a major update or expansion. In other words, unless Blizzard has secretly been working on the feature, it would be far off even if a decision was made to add it.
For the time being, Diablo 4 players will have to rely on the same practice that Diablo players have been resorting to over the years. If someone wants to try a new build, then the best option is to make a new character and level them up separately. Diablo 4's seasonal live service structure will offer that opportunity in its own way. It's not a great solution, but that's how Diablo has always been.
Diablo 4 is available now on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
