An essential part of Diablo 4's endgame is taking on the game's powerful Lair Bosses for the chance at earning build-defining Mythic gear. Diablo 4 players can challenge the Lair Boss ladder at any point once reaching Torment 1 difficulty, but they won't be able to claim rewards from the boss's loot chest after defeating them without the requisite boss materials specific to each boss. For players looking to farm Lair Bosses for Uniques or Mythics, they'll have to farm boss materials first.
Unlike some Diablo 4 farming strategies, there is no way to guarantee that the specific boss materials that a player needs will drop. However, players can reliably farm all types of boss materials with a two-pronged strategy that offers plenty of opportunities for boss materials to spawn. By working both Diablo 4's Helltides, and the Kurast Undercity dungeon, players should be able to set themselves up to be swimming in boss materials with the right approach.
This boss materials farming strategy requires players to own the Vessel of Hatred DLC for Diablo 4.
Diablo 4 Season 10 Players Looking for Boss Materials Should Try This Farming Route
There are 5 different Initiate-level Lair Bosses for Diablo 4 players to challenge, along with 3 Greater Lair Bosses and one Exalted Lair Boss in Belial, Lord of Lies. Each of these Lair Bosses has its own specific materials that are required for opening their associated loot chest after defeating them:
- Girgoire — Living Steel
- Beast in the Ice — Distilled Fear
- Echo of Varshan — Malignant Heart
- Lord Zir — Exquisite Blood
- Urivar (DLC Only) — Judicator's Mask
- Duriel — Shard of Agony
- Andariel — Pincushioned Doll
- Harbinger of Hatred (DLC Only) — Abhorrent Heart
- Belial, Lord of Lies — Betrayer's Husk
This farming route is ideal for earning materials for Initiate Lair Bosses, but also works as a decent way to farm Greater Boss materials as well. However, the ideal way to farm Greater Lair Boss materials is still to simply farm Initiate Lair Bosses.
Farm Undercity Tributes from Helltides
The first part of this boss materials farming route involves earning Undercity Tributes from Helltide sources such as Blood Maidens and Helltide Chests. Specifically, players should look for Tributes of Titans, which increase the amount of boss materials earned from a successful Undercity run as long as players hit rank 1. Using Baneful Hearts to invoke Blood Maidens increases the rewards players can earn from them, so it's a good idea to contribute to the summoning ritual when possible to make Tribute drops more likely.
What makes this method for farming Undercity Tributes preferable is that it accomplishes two different tasks. First, players can complete Whispers in Helltides and redeem them for a Whisper Cache with a chance for Tributes to drop. Additionally, by defeating Blood Maidens and opening Helltide Chest for Tributes, boss materials themselves also have a chance to drop, giving players double the opportunities to find useful loot.
Use Tributes of Titans to Earn Boss Materials from the Kurast Undercity
Once players have a sufficient number of Tributes of Titans, the second step of this farming route is to repeatedly run the Kurast Undercity dungeon while using a Tribute of Titans to increase the boss materials rewards from a successful run. For players who don't have the Vessel of Hatred DLC and can't access the Undercity, remaining in Helltides and farming Blood Maidens with Baneful Hearts is the optimal strategy. Once players have a maximum stack of a particular Initiate Lair Boss's materials, they can move on to farming that boss for Greater Lair Boss materials, and the chance for a Belial incursion to earn the Betrayer's Husks needed for the Exalted Lair Boss's reward chests.
