Season 11 of Diablo 4 is right around the corner, launching on December 11, 2025. Called the Season of Divine Intervention, Season 11 will introduce major new threats, changes to mechanics like Masterworking, the Tower, the Divine Gifts seasonal mechanic, and more, further shaking up Diablo 4's ARPG sandbox.

One of the most significant additions to Diablo 4 in Season 11 is actually more of a reprisal: Azmodan, one of the seven Lesser Evils and an antagonist of Diablo 3, will be joining the fray. Known as the Lord of Sin, Azmodan is a grotesque, spider-like demon who played a major role in the Sin War and other conflicts within Hell. He also launched a catastrophic invasion of Sanctuary, and appears to be doing so again with his demonic kinsmen in Diablo 4 Season 11.

Azmodan's Lore and Role in Diablo 4 Season 11, Explained

Azmodan's Early History and Struggle Against the Prime Evils

When Tathamet, the second being to ever exist, was killed by the first being to ever exist, Anu, each of his seven heads festered and morphed into unholy deities known as the Lesser Evils. They are "lesser" only in the sense that they are individually weaker than the three Prime Evils; they are still immeasurably powerful by mortal standards.

Following the Prime Evils' attempts to gain the allegiance of humankind during the Sin Wars, the Lesser Evils grew dismayed and disillusioned, fearing that the Primes were being distracted and cowardly in their war against Heaven. Azmodan worked with Diablo's Belial, another of the Lesser Evils, to overthrow the Prime Evils and banish them to Sanctuary, the mortal plane of the in-game universe. The pair's main goals were twofold: to gain greater control of Hell for themselves and start a proxy conflict between the Primes and the forces of Heaven in Sanctuary, thus leaving the Gates of Heaven open for attack.

Azmodan and Belial were successful, but would soon turn on each other, thrusting Hell into yet another civil war. Azmodan would hold a significant advantage over his opponent for a long time, but they eventually landed on some semblance of peace, setting their sights on mortalkind once again. Hungry for greater power, and not just over Hell, Azmodan mounted an invasion of Sanctuary.

Azmodan's Role in Diablo 3

Banished to Sanctuary and unable to manifest corporeally without a human host, Diablo, in the spirit of the Dark Wanderer, spawned Leah with the human Adria as an ideal vessel for the Prime Evils. Leah was raised by Deckard Cain and grew up to assist the Nephalem in his battle against Azmodan, who was attempting to steal the Black Soulstone, an apparatus used to entrap demons. This journey would culminate in Diablo 3's Mount Arreat, where the Nephalem, Adira, Leah, and the fallen angel Tyrael would confront and defeat Azmodan, trapping his spirit in the Black Soulstone along with the other six Lesser Evils.

But Adria, who had been a double-agent for Diablo throughout the entirety of Diablo 3's story, betrayed the group and sacrificed Leah in order to summon Diablo, who was now infused with the essences of Azmodan and his kin. Despite becoming the most powerful being in existence, Diablo was defeated by the Nephalem, and his spirit returned to the Black Soulstone, still infused with the souls of the Lesser Evils. Eventually, the Black Soulstone was destroyed, and the Lesser Evils broke off from Diablo.

Azmodan's Role in Diablo 4 Season 11

The Lesser evils are returning to Sanctuary in Diablo 4's 11th season, launching an assault helmed by Azmodan. As such, Azmodan will appear as the first new world boss since Diablo 4's launch. Players can take him on in both Seasonal and Eternal realms, where he may appear in the following locations:

  • Fractured Peaks - The Crucible
  • Scosglen - Caer Adar
  • Dry Steppes - Saraan Caldera
  • Hawezar - Fields of Desecration
  • Kehjistan - Seared Basin
  • Nahantu - The Cauldron

Azmodan will also be summonable from Summoning Altars in Hawezar, if the player has the requisite Materials. During each battle, Azmodan will appear with a different power related to one of the other six Lesser Evils.
