Summary
- Competitive Diablo 4 players are upset over the absence of leaderboards in Season 7.
- Blizzard is exploring new Diablo 4 leaderboard ideas.
- Community suggestions and fan requests may influence the future implementation of Diablo 4 leaderboards.
Competitive Diablo 4 players have expressed disappointment at the Season 7 omission of leaderboards. Blizzard is looking at alternative Diablo 4 leaderboard methods, and this has left many fans questioning the trajectory of the game.
Leaderboards have been a staple of Diablo games since the release of Diablo 3, with Diablo 2 featuring a competitive ladder system that shares similarities with the system. Unlike past Diablo games, the Diablo 4 leaderboards have focused on different end-game activities, like The Pit of Artificers and the Trial Gauntlet. The Pit offers 150 tiers that scale in difficulty and rewards and leave players only 15 minutes to advance as far into it as they can. The Trial Gauntlet features level 124 enemies, an 8-minute timer, and a focus on speed and memorization. With the recent release of Diablo 4 Season 7, many players are questioning the future of the game's leaderboards.
Diablo 4 Season 7 Making Change to Welcome Back Booster
Diablo 4 is making a big change to the Welcome Back Booster, which is sure to be of use to returning players.
Diablo 4 Community Manager Adam Fletcher recently responded to a fan asking about the return of the Trial Gauntlet. According to Fletcher, the Trial Gauntlet may not return because Blizzard is "maybe" looking to do leaderboards "in other ways in the future." This response caused a bunch of tweets making various leaderboard requests for Diablo 4, including a focus on The Pit, bringing back Diablo 4's Trial Gauntlet, and entirely new suggestions. Beyond these requests, some disheartened players also suggested that they feel no purpose playing Diablo 4 without active leaderboards.
Blizzard Is Looking at Different Ideas for Future Diablo 4 Leaderboards
Diablo 4 Season 7 will be released on January 21, 2025, with several things for players to do beyond improving their characters' gear. Dubbed the Season of Witchcraft, the content update includes many class changes and general fixes, new items and runes to unlock, and a significant focus on unique Witch Powers split into three categories. Although Season 7's patch notes are monumental, some players are lamenting things that are missing from previous seasons, notably the competitive leaderboards. Although not novel to the Diablo series, some fans indicated that they'd like a system akin to the Greater Rifts in Diablo 3. Similar to The Pit, Greater Rifts' rewards and difficulty scaled as players progress, eventually being capped at stage 100 with Torment 10.
Given that Adam Fletcher has indicated that Blizzard is looking for new ways to address leaderboards, developers may be looking at fan suggestions for inspiration. Beyond that, Blizzard may implement an idea that no fans have suggested, but that could be the most popular system yet. As Blizzard continues to update Diablo 4, a new leaderboard system may be introduced in a future patch.
