Diablo 4's fourth season, Season of Loot Reborn, will include plenty of updates and reworks that players have been eagerly awaiting since the game's release. These updates and reworks will make itemization, leveling up, and endgame content more rewarding and fun.

One such new system is Tempering, which allows for more refinement and control over players' gear and affixes, making it easier than ever to build players' playstyles how they want. This guide will explain this new system and how players can use it to become the best demon slayers they can be.

What is Tempering in Diablo 4?

Tempering is a new gear upgrade system in Diablo 4 season 4. It will give players more control over their gear and allow them to customize it to fit their build and theme. With Tempering, players can add new affixes to their gear as they level up and take on endgame content.

Whereas before the Occultist allowed you to reroll one affix on your gear, Tempering will let you add one new affix to your gear, with Ancestral gear able to add two Tempered affixes. This can be done by any blacksmith in the game. The idea is that players can craft and alter their gear to their playstyle more easily than before, with more refinement and direction.

Tempering Manuals in Diablo 4

Tempering Manuals are the items players need to Temper their gear. These items are found in almost all content in the game, including bosses, Nightmare Dungeons, and Helltides. Once found, players can learn the manual, which adds the manual and its affixes to the Temper tab in the Codex of Power. Players can use these as many times as they want, much like the changes to the Aspects, so there is no need to reacquire them again and again.

Each manual has three tiers of power: Magic, Rare, and Legendary. Legendary is the strongest and has the same affixes as Magic and Rare, only with higher number ranges. Like Aspects, finding the better version will update your manual and become your new default option in your Codex.

These manuals have six categories, which indicate what items they can be used on, which are listed below:

  • Weapons: Weapons
  • Offensive: Weapons, amulets, gloves, and rings
  • Defensive: Shields, helms, chest, pants, and amulets
  • Utility: Shields, helms, chest, pants, amulets, gloves, and boots
  • Mobility: Amulets and boots
  • Resource: Amulets and rings

How to Temper Gear in Diablo 4

Diablo-4-Tempering-UI-2

To Temper gear, visit a blacksmith and select the option to Temper gear, which can be found in the tabs at the top of the merchant's window.

From there, choose the piece of gear to Temper and select the Tempering Manual to use on it, provided it is in the correct category. Players will then see the gold cost and the materials needed to Temper. Once they accept, the gear will be Tempered, and one of the affixes from the Tempering Manual selected will apply to it.

This selection of affix is random, but players can reroll their affix at the cost of Temper durability, which is 5. After players have Tempered gear 5 times, they cannot do it again and will be stuck with whatever rolls they have.

This is just one of the new systems coming in Diablo 4 Season of Loot Reborn, along with several other major changes to the game's itemization that will refine the game into one many players have been longing for since release. With changes to content and a more streamlined, player-friendly progression, Diablo 4 is setting itself up for a very successful season and lead-up to the Vessel of Hatred expansion coming later this year.
