Tempering will let Diablo 4 players add powerful affixes to their gear and hone their demon-killing powers however they see fit.

What is the Pit in Diablo 4?

The Pit is a new piece of endgame content in Diablo 4 introduced in Season 4, Season of Loot Reborn. This mode features timed dungeon-like encounters, where players must defeat a set number of enemies in under 10 minutes to unlock the boss, and dying reduces the timer, making it a tougher fight. By defeating the boss in time, players earn rewards and materials used with Masterworking,

Clearing a tier unlocks the next one. Clearing with 4-6 minutes spare allows players to skip a level and unlock an additional tier, and finishing with more than 6 minutes skips two tiers. The Pit has 200 levels.

How To Unlock The Pit

Players unlock The Pit at World Tier 4, where they will get a new priority quest to complete a Tier 46 dungeon, which will award them Runeshards, which also drop from Helltide chests, World Bosses, Legion Events, Nightmare Dungeons, and Whisper rewards.

Once collected, players can use these to activate the Obelisk, which is located in Cerrigar. From there, they can take on The Pit and begin to process through its tiers and earn its rewards. Players can tackle The Pit solo or in a group of 4, and the player who spends the Runeshards opening The Pit gets some extra materials and rewards for their troubles.

Rewards from The Pit

The main reward players will want from The Pit is the Masterwork materials, which are needed to use the Masterworking system to refine their gear. Depending on the tier, players will get different rewards, which are listed below.

  • Obducite: Tier 1 to 20
  • Ingolith: Tier 21 to 40
  • Neathiron: Tier 41 & onward

These can also be transmuted down to the lower grade by talking with an Alchemist.

Players will also get a chance to earn Stygian Stone for defeating the boss, regardless of the tier. This stone is used when summoning Tormented Echos, the level 200 version of the endgame bosses. The higher the tier, the greater the chance of a drop.
